Page 14 URBANA DAILY CITIZEN Wednesday January 16 1991 Safety Council to meet in Urbana on Jan 17 The Champaign County Safety Council sponsored by the Urbana Area Chamber of Commerce will begin its 1991 programming with a meeting on Thursday January 17 at 11:30 am in the South Restaurant in Urbana The local safety council meets monthly with programs that examine and resolve potential and existing safety problems affecting businesses New safety techniques products and services are pre sented to the members At the January 17th meeting Donna lora of the Champaign County Health Department will be offering cholesterol screenings The local safety council will offer one free screening per member company A small fee will be charged for additional screenings Dr Mohammed Khan car diologist at Mercy Memorial Hospital will speak on the effects of cholesterol on the car diovascular system Any Champaign County business or industry is welcome to attend and join the Council Ap proximately 30 companies are now active in the Council On March 14 1991 an annual Safety Awards Banquet will be held to honor local companies with good safety records for 1990 or monammed Khan Olympic medalist to be Univ speaker Olympic gold medalist and former American track record holder Lucinda Adams will speak at Urbana winter convocation on Thursday Jan 17 at 11 am in the University Community Center Adams is supervisor of Health Physical Education and Driver Education with the Dayton Public Schools A native of Savannah Georgia Lucinda was a member of the 1956 United States Olympic Track Team that competed in Melbourne Australia That year she also com peted in the first US USSR Track and ield Meet in Moscow and won gold medal in both the 200 meter dash and 400 meter relay After winning three gold medals and setting the American 200 meter record in the 1958 Pan American Games in Chicago she again qualified for the Olympic Team in 1960 and won a gold as a member of the 400 meter relay team After retiring from competitive track she has enjoyed a career in education Adams received her BS in HealthPhysical Education and MS in Educational Administration and Supervision from Tennessee State University She also has taken ad ditional hours in Athletic Administra tion at the University of Dayton She has been with the Dayton Public Schools since 1961 first as a teacher and coach and then as an ad ministrator A member of numerous professional and civic organizations she is also active in the Mount Morah Missionary Baptist Church in Day ton where she serves as Director of Christian (513) 652 1301 Treatment plant tops agenda in Urbana By KATHLEEN OX efficiency administrators say Managing Editor Public Works Director Art Baer said The wastewater treatment plant the plant is nearing capacity the nuisance ordinance and although it still has room to handle newspaper recycling were discussed more construction in the city at the Urbana City Council work Currently an average of 23 million session last night gallons of effluent enter the plant each day The plant was built to treat 3 million gallons a day Asked by the council for an update on the treatment plant city ad ministrators said they will recom mend the council approve the low bid of $2292900 from Thomas and Marker Construction Bellefontaine to refurbish the plant That recommendation is scheduled for the January 22 council meeting While the improvements will not increase capacity they will improve Baer said Howard Paper Mills wants to hook into the plant by the end of the year which probably will mean an additional 200000 gallons a day He added that in the near future the city should consider expanding the plant Director of Administration Lawrence Wolke said the city plans further infiltration studies to determine where rainwater may be leaking into the sewer system Concerning the nuisance ordinance City Prosecutor Skip Weithman said two violators will be prosecuted and could be fined for violating the ordinance which constitutes a minor misdemeanor He said he would inform the council of the court decisions Wolke said it was decided to take two of the worst offenders to court to make it known that violation notices to property owners mean something Weithman said nuisance or dinances can concern only dangers to public health and safety and cannot be used against properties that are deemed unsightly Council members city ad ministrators publisher Mark Henry of the Urbana Daily Citizen and Sarah and Bill inch who recently opened New Age Recycling on Glenn Avenue briefly discussed the possibility of eventually recycling newspapers in the city Although it was noted that recycling newspapers is not profitable at the moment Sarah inch said people she has talked to are more concerned with getting the papers recycled than they are with making money Henry said the Daily Citizen could Moore is new Urbana BOE president By AMY MARTINEAU Citizen Staff Writer Greg Moore was elected president and Sue Maurice was elected vice president at the reorganizational meeting of the Urbana City Board of Education last night During the meeting the board also approved meeting at 7:30 pm on the third Tuesday of every month A service fund of $7500 was established by the board and a salary of $80 a month for board members was ap proved After the reorganizational meeting students from the district were awarded for academic achievements and excellence in writing More than 135 students par ticipated this year in the Excellence in Writing competition sponsored by Urbana City Schools and Champaign National Bank The competition is held in the fall and spring of each school year The finalists in each participating grade receive a $50 savings bond from Champaign National Bank inalists announced at last board meeting were Kristin Weimer kindergarten readiness I II Jesse Spires grade one and ECPC Brian Proud grade two Nikki Gibson grade three Dana Mirrell grade four Gayle Correspondent MECHANICSBURG Ron Saylor was elected president and John Powers vice president at the reorganizational meeting of the Mechanicsburg Board of Education Monday evening Regular meetings for 1991 were set for the third Monday of each month at 8 pm The board approved a projected budget for 1991 1992 of $2901 Super intendent Kevin Turner said projected budget would allow Mechanicsburg to do the best job of educating our boys and The board appointed Ron Saylor to represent the school board to the Athletic Board Jim Trainer was proved employee liability insurance with the Nationwide Insurance Company of Columbus at a policy rate of $7991 leet and other vehicle insurance was also awarded to Nationwide Insurance Company of Columbus through local agent Linda Cosby at a policy rate of $6858 for 1991 The board approved entering into a service contract with the Whittle Communications Agency to install TVs and hookups at Urbana Junior High School The company provides Channel One a news service geared toward students Currently the program is used at Urbana High School The hook ups are at no cost to the board or district chosen as representative to the Ohio Hi Point JVS Board of Education John Powers will Represent the board on the negotiating team rom the community Mary Lou Dawicke was appointed as a trustee to the public library for a seven year term The board also empowered Turner to act as its agent in matters of purchasing negotiating expenses federal programs staff expenses and compliance with federal laws The treasurer Alice Creamer was authorized to invest available funds and request advancements on tax monies The next meeting is the regular meeting on Monday January 21 at 8 pm in the highschool media center Saylor is new president of Mechanicsburg BOE
