project to upgrade the facili ties at the municipal park Among the projects undertaken by the Athletic Boosters over the years have been the completion of ball dia mond behind the school the operation of the summer ball program the pur chase of a scoreboard In the new Jack son Center High School gymnasium and buying a pitching machine for the high school baseball team according to Bart Smith president of the group Smith said the group will soon com plete another project the construction of a concession stand storage building on the school grounds The project which also includes restrooms is ex Drovements are Brad Wren and Jerry a AAHiAlAlArl Ihlfl eummar pCVLCU IU Uv uumpivicu iuw juiuiuvi With the end of the latest project in sight the group needed a new project Smith said the group decided that new outdoor basketball courts would be the most immediate need He said the only public outdoor courts in the communi ty are at the school and those facilities are in poor condition Basketball courts "We thought the basketball courts would get the most use at the park so we decided to see if the town was in terested in developing recreational fa Smith said The group found that the village was more than happy to enter the park de velopment as a joint venture re ally encouraged by the said Richard Sailor village administrator Sailor said except for an occasional picnic the village park is largely un derused trying to make it into more of a community Sailor said The village recreation advisory board and representatives of the Ath letic Boosters have been meeting to plot a course for the park develop ment Plans have been drawn for the improvements to the park The plans call for the development of two basketball courts four tennis courts a volleyball court and horse shoe pits The access road through the park also would be rerouted around the development Smith said cost figures have not been 1 established for the park improve 1 ments He said some preliminary work such as the placement of a water main is expected to take place this year Smith said supporters hope the first phase of the project can begin this year The construction of the horse shoe pits and volleyball court will be first on the list of projects since they would not involve as much expense as others Smith said it is hoped that by next spring the basketball courts will be completed The tennis courts would be developed later The Helpers Make A Airstream trailers at rally BELLEONTAINE An estimated 70 Airstream trailer homes will dot the Logan County airgrounds today through Sunday as part of a rally by the Miami Valley Unit of Ohio Wally Byam Caravan Club Bus Maynard of Dayton president of the organization said the New Carlisle Community Chorus will entertain ri Maplewood towers above the rest MAPLEWOOD Viewers tuning into the Public Television station in Day ton might be intrigued when they hear that W63AH is located in Maplewood The have studios and there are no local television person alities but those who turn the dial to 63 will see the local channel on the air Channel 63 carries the same exact programming as does WPTD Channel 16 in Dayton The is actually a 130 foot tan television tower locat ed off Ohio 119 near the Wones Road intersection The tower picks up the Channel 14 16 signal and translates it to the Channel 63 designation to in crease the coverage area of the Dayton Oxford Public Television station according to Ernest Wells assistant chief engineer The second purpose of the translator is to send the Public Broadcasting signal westward to Celina where it is received and converted to Channel 17 The process enables the station to serve West Central Ohio Wells explained He said the translators are part of a statewide system (there are 11 such translators in Ohio) designed to enable schools and homes across Ohio to receive Ohio Educational Broadcasting The Ohio Educational Broadcasting provides a wide variety of educational programming five days a week be tween 9 am and 3 pm he said Wells said when the tower was erected 10 years ago it played a more important role in broadening the exposure to northern Shelby County and surrounding areas However a new broadcasting tower has since been constructed and the Dayton reception has been greatly improved in this area he said noting' the signal now carries about 50 to 75 miles The signal from the Maplewood tower carries about 25 to 30 miles he said The Maplewood area facilities which include a 1000 watt transmitter are not manned Wells said an engineer checks the automatic equipment once a week to make sure everything is working properly The tower is set back off the highway at the edge of a woods and many 'area residents might not even know its there unless they drive by at night and see the flashing red lights One person who knows quite a bit about the tower is Omar Stevens 18881 Ohio 119 The reasons why Interested in the tower are twofold irst the tower is practically In his backyard Second ly he has been designated as the official observer of the tQwer his responsibility to check the tower lights each night to make sufenbne of the bulbs have burned out The lights are attached to the tower to warn approaching airctgftJVhen ever Stevens notices a light is out he makes a notation in his daily log ana' contacts station communication headquarters in Dayton In turn the eder al Aviation Administration is notified and the necessary repairs are made Although the Maplewood translator has a channel designation there are no provisions for studios or actual broadcasting The tower also serves another purpose The Shelby County Sheriff's De partment also uses the structure for its radio transmissions to contact rescue squads In the northern portion of the county Hamburger MACARONI ANO CHEESE SAUCE MIX through fund raising efforts by the Athletic Boosters Smith said he has already been ap proached by several businesses who are Interested in contributing toward the improvements He said anyone in terested in making a contribution of money time or materials may contact one of the following committee tnem bers: red Bunke Jr Roger Detrick Dennis Brideweser Karen
