inevitable IT is inevitable that tape recorders will take over from shorthand writers in courts says an official report published yesterday Six new courts recently completed at the Royal Courts of on the mechanical recording of court i MM Stationery Office Is 3d) is produced by a committee of six headed by Mr Justice Baker One problem lhc committee says it is satisfied that tape-recording methods are feasible and mav prove to be more economical than shorthand reporting but it has not yet reached a conclusion about the possibility of producing from tape adequate transcripts of proceedings It concedes the future of the shorthand writer may prove the most difficult problem of all We shall continue to give it anxious and urgent consideration It recommends that an official statement should be issued as soon as possible to shorthand writers: The rules of court and the relevant part of the Criminal Appeal Act of 1907 have been amended to allow the taking of a tape recording in place of or in addition to the taking of a shorthand note It is also pointed out that most of the interim recommendations have already been carried out Vain search for Biggs TJOLICE have
