for the Ahrns ox Corp of Cincinnati and since that time fire apparatus had been built at the local plant Peterson stated that special Mack features including many of Mack manufactured components will be incorporated into the new line whenever and wherever feasi ble He disclosed that the com pany is now tooling an advanced new manual shift transmission for new inter city buses He emphasised that acquisition of the company now gives Mack complete production coverage in the bus Industry from the small school bus to the big luxury long distance liners In making the announcement the Mack president said the purchase adheres closely to the company policy of gradual diversification 1 and expansion within its primary field of production including plant here Previously Mack1 ha confined its manufacture to local transit type buses Possible future expansion of the local operation was indicated in the announcement from Plainfield that the transaction also includes a large plot of ground adjoining the Beck factory which will permit fu ture expansion of the operation The announcement by the Mack company also stated that II ouss who has been serving as general manager of the Beck company will continue as man ager of the plant which will op erate as a division of Mack Trucks Inc Enrollment In County Schools Totals 3552 More than 3500 students are en rolled in Shelby county schools this year Dr McCorkle county superintendent of schools said to day The superintendent said the school enrollment at the present time totals 3552 students or 167 more than were enrolled in the county schools at the end of the 1955 56 school year Dr McCorkle said that pects the total county enrollment to reach 3600 before the current school year ends In releasing the number of stu dents now president said that company will begin pro duction of! inter city buses im mediately in the facilities of the Township Group Transferred To Emerson School Transfer of the fifth arid sixth grade pupils from the Orange school to Emerson school and the opening of the kindergarten pro gram were completed Monday ac cording to an announcement today by superintendent of schools Harold McDermott The transfer of the two upper grades from the Orange school was decided upon following a confer ence of school officials with par ents of pupils in those grades held at the school Saturday afternoon Crowded conditions at Orange in the lower grades made it neces sary that some decision be made to alleviate the condition The trans fer makes it possible for the entire group to be assimilated into the school system without hiring an additional teacher Sherrill Andrews who was teach ing the combined group at Orange is being transferred to Emerson and will take the fifth grade with "Principal Wells taking over the sixth grade at that school McDermott pointed out that the planning of the board of education is to return the two grades to Orange next year when two more classrooms may be made avail able there The transfer became necessary when the enrollment at the rural school in the lower grades ex ceeded what had been anticipated on the basis of the survey last spring The superintendent stated that kindergarten classes were started Monday in all the schools with en rollment tight in all buildings ex cept Longfellow He indicated that approximately 25 more kindervar ten pupils could be handled at that school i With the completion of the kin dergarten enrollment the number of pupils in the loczal school sys tern reached 3361 as of this morn ing McDermott indicated that ad ditional pupils are coming in daily and this figure will probably reacn 3375 He pointed out that additional en rollment is expected in the high school He stated that approximate ly 40 students who registered Trucks Inc of Plainfield ounded in 1916 Mack Trucks has long held' an important posi tion as a manufacturer of heavy trucks Almost all of the trucks produced by Mack have a gross vehicle weight of 16000 pounds or more In 1955 the total number of trucks in this weight classifica tion produced in the United States was 173900 with Mack pro ducing about 85 per cent During 1955 Mack Trucks also produced about 42 per cent of all the diesel powered trucks made in this country The company makes over the road haulers as well as off the road trucks employed by the lumber mining and other industries Mack has also been an' increas ingly important manufacturer of transit buses and fire engines These accounted for 10 to 15 per cent of last sales With the purchase of the Beck Co local bus and fire engine manufac turer this proportion of the sales volume will increase materially In the coming years SALES vehicle parts and ac cessories represented another 20 percent of the 1955 dollar
