Dakin, Clerk of the If the same are not called for Court. THE very easy way in which James G. Blaine comes master of any situation is illustrated by the following incident: One evening Mr. Blaine was being entertained at dinner by a distinguished Londoner, and the conversation turned on the relatione between Great Britain and the United States. One of the members of the British Parliament, who sat by Mr.

Blaine, goodnaturedly criticized Mr. Blaine for the form of one of his dispatches to the British Government when Blaine was Secretary of State. "It seemed to me at the time," said the English statesman, "'thatyou were a little discourteous to England when you said in your dispatch to Her Majesty's Government that the United States expects such and such 'things of Mr. Blaine turned to his critic with the utmost nonchalance and remarked: "You forget, my dear sir, that I merely copied a phrase of a dispatch from Her Majesty's Government to the United States in the darkest period of the civil war. The tables are now turned.

When we were in trouble England 'expected' my country to do such and such things. Now, if you will pardon me, the United States is in a position to quote the phraseology and send it back again."
