The ACS-CAA quintet won the second contest of the night with a likewise wide spread, with a 56-28 victory, despite the incessant control of both boards by the losing Polar Wally Parker.

A close defensive press in the second half turned a close contest into a one-sided victory for the winners. Ralph Sweigle was top scorer for the winners with 22 points, followed by Frank Austin with 11, who played most of the second half with the handicap of four fouls, but managed to finish the' contest. Vince Ahkolik of the losing Hornets kept thisgs close for a time, ending up with 13 points followed by Parker with eight. Write: Alaska Steamship Company, Box 200, Anchorage OR Nome Agent For Information END OF CAMPAIGN .1 (Continued from Page One) appeared to hold a slight edge over Democrat Ernest Gruening, 71, in a battle between two former Alaska governors for the other Senate seat.

The length of the terms the first Alaska Senators will serve will be determined by a drawing when they take their seats in January. The Congressional contest between Democrat Ralph Rivers, 55, and Republican Henry Benson, 48, appeared a tossup. Rivers was far ahead in the early campaigning, but there was speculation that the 'big margin had vanished in the late days of the campaign. Democrat William Egan, 44. was favored to win the Governorship over John Butrovich 48, the Republican nominee.

Victory for Egan would carry into office as Secretary of State his Democratic running mate, Hugh J. Wade, 57. However, Butrovich and Brad Phillips, 33, GOP choice for Secretary, of State, appeared within striking distance if a Republican trend developed. Two Independent candidates, Mike Dollinter for Governor and Donald Holton for Secretary, were considered no factor in the outcome of the race. Democrats were expected-to win control of the first State Legislature, perhaps with as great a majority as they held in the last Territorial lawmaking session.

In the 1957 Legislature, the Democrats had a 21-3 edge in the House and an 11-5 margin in the Senate. Robert Groseclose of Fairbanks, chairman of the GOP Central Committee, placed a 38,000 estimate on the total vote. His Democratic counterpart, Felix Toner of Juneau, placed it somewhere between 35,000 and 40,000. More than 46,000 voted in August at a special referendum at which Alaskans accepted Statehood by a 5-1 margin. The highest previous vote in a strictly Territorial election came in 1956, when 28,903 Alaskans went to the polls.
