Fine this is the way school functions should be attended. We need more attendance at meetings where our tax dollars are put to use by fine men elected to office. Approximately 100 persons were in attendance at the special meeting called by the Elwood Athletic Club last Thursday and quite a few persons voiced their views they would be in attendance Thursday night when the school board meets. Coach Bill Hocker stated last Thursday that he didn't want any person's position in any school system.

"All I want is a good football Hocker related last week. number of teaching positions or other good and just cause. Members of our school administration have not. on the surface. disobeyed any of these rules and should be in good standing with members of our school board.

Several things could come forward at the meeting Thursday night. Elwood fans, especially junior high parents. will probably want to know why our lay personnel have been dismissed for the coming school year. The entire junior high football program at Richmond. as the rumor goes.

IS run by, men outside the school system. However, this is Richmond and none of our business. We have our own ideas about this subject. The men who donated their time to the junior high football program turned in a fine job. However.

if we have the coaches to run the job now fine. Blackie Wilson. Ken Hill and the other men will be happy to leave the job of teaching football fundamentals to our young men to the school coaches. School officials made a statement last week that they can't hire persons to coach football and another one to teach classes. We need men who qualify in the classroom to teach besides coach on the sidelines.

This is a fair statement. The main part of any junior high and senior high program is the educational side not the "athletic side. We maintain that our young men and women should receive an education first Fischer Sets World To Watching Chess NEW YORK you one-time Boy Wonder who play makes guys like Joe Namath "No." said Wes Parker. first and Dick Allen look like a baseman for the Los Angeles couple of amateurs when it Dodgers owner of one of comes to doing his own thing. baseball's more active minds.

will not them outside the school system in the labor market unless they are a John Mengelt. However, we have always maintained that a healthy athletic program. aids a school and city in a lot of ways. Attendance in school (when a school is having a winning season) is bound to be up and the towns -people are in a better frame of mind on the streets. We saw this when our 1964-65 basketball club finished with a 19-1 record.

Some of the other problems or questions that could pop up at the meeting Thursday are: why we had improper equipment for our boys last fall and other times over the seasons like cold showers. Athletic director Bob Moore has promised this won't happen this fall. 4 We need a pep club for our football program- -a pep club that will back our cheerleaders and school band. We need football banquet or fall banquet for our boys and girls. more interest from our service city clubs and better equipment for our bovs.

Football can be a money making project. It was last season. A total of $8.268 taken in for the football season of 1971 and this can be traced back to an interest on behalf of our coaches and fans. We have to add one thing to this $8.268 total. The increase In revenue last fall was not due to an increase in ticket prices.

The $1.25 ticket price last fall was in force for the 1970 football season also. Elwood had a proud football tradition until around the 1967 season. Since that time our football clubs on the high school record (freshmen. junior varsity and varsity level have won only 31. games and dropped 78 for a 28-percentage.

Our clubs in 1967. 1968 and 1969 won only 18 and lost Harden 13 seasons. and lost Not 34 too over good the a record. This is a proud city. We want a better school and are in the process of building that long awaited school.

Maybe new school facilities will help our athletic football program. don't believe they will help that much, We need the backing of the entire school and city to get the job accomplished. I'll back any school administrator. school board member. coach or fan who wants the right thing for our young people and city.

We don't like any under the table tricks or the entire program will be exposed to the public by this fellow. This is only fair reporting on the part of any newspaper person despite what some people may say or do. We should all make an attempt to be in attendance at the school board meeting on Thursday. However. we can't go to the event half-cocked or nothing will come of our ideas and dreams.

Athletic Award Systems The current athletic award system was rewritten and adopted back on May 11. 1970. We have heard many pro and con statements about the system but we don't plan on issuing any comments on the item right now. 26. However, we should review the system.

The athletic board that individuals cannot reach their potential in athletics by being part time athletes. To become a good or great athlete one must participate consistently in various fields of athletics as each sport contributes to the total development of the individual. The original award system had the division of program divided into four seasons. The summer months had baseball as a major sport. fall had football as a major sport while cross country was listed as a minor Basketball was the major winter.

sport while swimming and wrestling was classified as minor sports. Spring found track listed a major sport while golf and tennis was in the minor sport department. The new system made up in 1970 had only three seasons cross country and tennis: winter-basketball and wrestling and spring -track. baseball and golf. All sports are classified as being major now.

System of point awards old award system had ten items while the current one has only four listings. Points for awards may be achieved in the following ways now: 1. Participation in a sport entire season-'2 point: 2. Participation in a sport entire season but meeting higher qualifications as set up by head coach in that sport-1 point. 3.

The old I system of point awards found any boy participating in a mjaor sport for an entire season gaining 2 point and participating in a minor sport for entire season receiving point. Freshman participating in a major sport for an entire, season received '2 point and point for a minor season.

Boys on the varsity level received point for playing on a title team or for being on an all-conference club and sectional title club. Boys with good scholarship ability with a average received 1.2 point while boys with an A or received a 3, point. Awards--Awards today are awarded to boys in various ways. One only 6-inch letter will be awarded to a participant when he has earned his first point as a varsity participant. This letter will be worn only on a sweater which is purchased by the athlete from the athletic department.

A certificate is awarded each time an athlete receives one point in any sport in one season. A chevron will be awarded in the first sport once each year for varsity play. regardless of the number of sports played. An award jacket with a standard 6" inch, letter. chevrons denoting years of play and an emblem denoting any team title will be awarded to an athlete upon earning a total of six points.

No athlete will receive a jacket who has not earned a point in varsity competition. No jacket will be presented prior to the athlete's senior year. An athlete may also be presented a blanket upon gaining a total of 12 points. These are the main points of the current award system-a system which has drawn both pro and con from people over the years. The system has its good and bad points.

I have one opinion about the system. I believe the biggest complaint about the athletic award system has to do with boys participating in only one sport and not gaining anything except letter. Maybe we should keep all sports a major project but award two points each year to boys who participate on basketball and football varisty clubs on a regular basis. After all. these two sports are the only ones bringing in any money at the This way a boy will be awarded a jacket if he participates on a varsity football or basketball team for three years on a regular hasis.

This is only an idea of ours and we may be out of line but we like to put our foot in the bucket every once in a while. imagine the system will receive a viewing by our athletic board and maybe some changes will be made. However. you're always going to find someone unhappy over any system. just can't please everyone.
