The Word BACK butonlyjust isThe Word the outspoken chat comedy and music show presented by Terry Christian and Dani Behr Now in its fifth series the programme has never shied away from controversy but it took a fairly tasteless joke about incest by American actor Alexis Arquette to get it even more notoriety in its last series The Independent Television Commission actually considered banning live talk and comedy shows after that but The Word survives and doubtless there will be more moments during this series for TV watchdogs to grow grey hairs about Editor Duncan Grey denies that the programme sets out to shock to establish its credentials among its young viewers "I get tired of hearing that The Word just sets out to shock The show is not gratuitous there is always a clever twist behind the items Some might ask what the clever twist was behind a man eating a pile of toe nail clippings just to be seen on TV in the last series Regular presenter Terry Christian who is joined by two new hosts as well as Dani Behr says he finds it hard to see why The Word is so popular Weighty problem Star Profile Patrick Robinson CASUALTY regular Robinson who plays charge Ash Ashford is to dealing with Despite some friction Patrick has had a happy time with Casualty but he reveals he he may soon be moving on for belles "You cant put your finger on why people like The Word But I could never put my finger on why people like Noel Edmonds It doesnt mean he's no good does it? "Some people can't bear to watch mistakes but they're being over-critical I think the show needs flaws You've got to have low points to have the high points Joanne Whalley-Kilmer walking out on me live on air that was a high point I basically accused her of being a snob and she got the hump about it!" The Word remains one of Channel 4's most popular programmes and a cult show Patrick hard-pressed nurse used stress in his real-life private and working life Because of the colour of his skin he was the first black actor to play Romeo for the Royal Shakespeare Company he has always had to endure the taunts of racists "Racism is always there even on the set of Casualty" he claims "I know that if I make a big fuss about something I will be dismissed as having an attitude" "There's talk of this now becoming twice weekly with two half-hour episodes "At the moment you can develop several storylines and see them through in a proper conclusive way I'm not sure that would be the case with half-hour programmes" He could well be back on stage before long already he has been seen as Heathcliff in the stage version of Wuthering BILLED as Britain's answer to The Golden Girls BRIGHTON BELLES ITV Wednesday at 650pm the Brighton Belles didn't exactly hit the spot during its first series but Carlton's producers have bravely persisted and here we see the start of series two Four of Britain's most experienced comedy actresses have been drafted in for this tale of four lively 50-plus-some-things who refuse to slow down just because they're getting older Jean Boht Sheila Hancock Sheila Gish and Wendy Craig are the four glamorous grans Jean Boht plays Josephine the mother of Sheila Hancock's character Frances despite the fact that in real life she is two years younger than her on-screen daughter "We're none of us in our first flush" she says Wendy Craig said: "I got down to my target weight and was feeling very pleased with myself but I realise that my face was looking so haggard and lined and it was all from the constant dieting "It meant I had to make a big decision I had to choose between remaining slim or allowing myself to put on a bit of weight Giving up dieting was a big relief" says Wendy Sheila Gish said: "I had forgotten that I was no longer 21 and weight doesn't come off so easily any more "I have lost it slowly by eating sensibly and not mixing carbohydrates and proteins found this far more effective than rigorous dieting" THE WORD Channel 4 Friday at 1110pm THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE BBC1 Saturday at 805pm Shirley tops the bill SINGING stars from different generations come together for the Royal Variety Performance at the Dominion Theatre London Topping the bill will be perennial favourite Shirley Bassey and American crooner Tony Bennett while top teen group Take That will entertain with a medley of Motown songs 600 925 955 1000 1035 1220 1230 1255 125 150 GMTV Supermarket Sweep Granada News (Teletext) -The Time the Place -This Morning Granada News (Granada Weather) ITN Lunchtime News Weather Shortland Street Home and Away (Teletext) Danielle Steel's Fine Things The moving story of Bernie Fine's struggle to keep his adopted daughter from her ruthless father concludes (Final part) Gardeners' Diary ITN News Headlines (Teletext) Granada News (Teletext) The Magic House The Spooks of Bottle Bay Avenger Penguins Taz-Mania Virtually Impossible Take the High Road ITN Early Evening News Weekend Weather (Teletext) Home and Away (Granada Weather) Granada Tonight (Teletext) KickOff Catchphrase (Teletext) Coronation Street Raquel has to decide how she feels about her life her career and Curly Watts (Teletext) The Bill 'King of the Boyden has a lonely night with only a villain for company (Teletext) Strange but True?
