A SNAKE ATE PERSIMMONS. And It Was Owing to This Weak- ness of His That the Negro Escaped. Gainesville (Ala.) Messenger. Recently Madison Jolly, a well known negro of Greene county, was attacked by a large rattlesnake about three miles from hero. Ho threw his bundles down and made for the nearest tree, which happened to be a large persimmon tree loaded with noe fruit, into which he quickled climbed, knocking off some of the ripe persimmons as he made his way 'up into the tree.

When the snake arrived at the foot of the tree, instead of climbing up after the negro he began to eat the fruit which had fallen to the ground. After the snake had finished devouring all the persimmons insight he began to coil himself around the tree preparatory to climbing it. The fright- ened negro, seeing the snake had eaten the fallen persimmons, gathered a handful and threw. them to the ground, then the snake uncoiled from around the tree and began to oat the fruit the darkey had thrown down. This was repeated several times.

when the darky bethought himself of a small vial of morphine which he was carrying home to his sick He split open several persimmons and emptied the contents of the vial upon and dropped them to his snakeship, who immediately ate them. The drug acted like a charm upon the snake, and ho Was soon lying helpless upon the ground. The negro climbed down and ran to a house near by and secured help and returned and dispatched the snake lying helpless from the effects of the morphine. The snake was eight- een feet long, six inches in diameter and had forty -four rattles and a button on the end of his tail, and had been the terror of Tube's Crook swamp for the past twenty- five or thirty years. JOSIAH ALLEN'S WIFE.

She Is Building a New House In Her Native New York Sun. Miss Henrietta Holley, "Josiah Allen's wife," is building herself a new home at Adams, Jefferson county, N. her native place. Until it is finished she will continue to live in the modest little cottage where she was born, situated on the outskirts of the village. When she was a girl she thought she.

should like to be a great" painter and then a poet, and then she. became "Josiah Allen's wife," and famous. A desire to help her parents led her to try the powers of her pen, and with her book, "Samantha at the Centennial," she gained money and reputation. She had previous to that time written a great deal of poetry, which she has since published in book form. The world knows her best, how- ever, as plain "Josiah Allen's wife," and seeks no other entertainment at her hand than further accounts of herself and Betsy Bobbitt.

Miss Holley is the youngest of six children, and is the only one unmarried. She has never lived away from her quiet country home for long at a time, and, now that she is building a new cot- tage, and, as she says, "full of business, digging a new well, moving linos, build- ing fences and setting out trees," she will hardly be tempted away from her retreat by any social inducements that may be offered her. Miss Holley has made a fortune with her pen, and is en- joying the results of her labors in the most rational and satisfactory way. Jokers' Walk-Around. I was looking across the field. The warmth, the faint perfume of some apple-blossoms in desk, and the murmuring noise made by the girls while studying, conspired to make me feel drowsy. .1: felt that I should certainly have to put my head upon the desk and go to sleep if, something did not happen. And something did hap- pen. There is a wing to our school building, in which the janitor and his family reside.

I gave him one scornful look and turned mv face away.

A row moments, later' I looked that way again and he was still sitting there looking at me. I fell an uncontrollable desire to make a face, and made it. He immediately arose and walked away. Tuesday, Oct. summer vacation is over; in school has well commenced. lam not to go this winter; thank goodness, my school- days are over. 1 sometimes dream that 1 am still a school-girl, and feel the greatest relief in the morning when I awake to find that I am not. Last even- ing I attended my first full-dress party; the affair was given by the parents of a friend of mine in honor of her birth- day.

The evening was lovely and cool. so I looked my best. I wore pink; pink is my color. My friend's brother, a great admirer of mine, called for mo quite early, so that I might have a chat with his sister before tile guests began to arrive. "Oh, Millie, how lovely you look!" was her first exclamation on seeing me.

"And I am so glad, for I expect Cousin Frank to-night, of whom you have often heard mo speak, and I should be de- lighted if you would take a fancy to each "What nonsense!" I said. And then we began to talk of other our dresses, the flowers, the music and our friends. Presently the guests began to arrive. Among' the first was Dr. Frank Howard, my friend's cousin.

Ho seemed to take a fancy to mo at once. Wo talked and danced' to- gether a great many times, and when the time came for me to leave ho asked to call upon me. As 1 looked up from fastening my gloves to reply and saw him smiling down upon mc 1 could not help -but think I had seen him some- whore before; but where? That's what puzzles me. But he was by far the handsomest and nicest gentleman there. tu.

Wednesday, June my Wednesday, June 1, Well, my friend Ida's wish has come to pass. Her cousin Frank and I did take a fancy to each other; in fact, wo have been married just one month, and we have the sweetest little home that any one, could wish for. Frank and I are sitting together in our cosy little parlor. The conversation turns upon my friendship for Ida. "Where did you and Ida first become friends?" Frank "Why," 1 said, "we were school girls together at the academy en street." "Is that so?" said Frank.

"Well, I had qttiie a comical experience at that school once." And then to my astonishment he told me of the incident that I wrote in my diary just four years ago to-day. "What in the name of goodness were you doing in the janitor's house?" I asked. "Why, I had been called iv to attend; one of the children, and mighty glad was, for I hadn't; many calls in those days," ho answered. Then a sudden look of intelligence came into his eyes as he asked "Why, you don't mean to say you were the girl?" I answered yes, and he asked why I had so distorted my face. Then I told him he was so horrid I couldn't help it, and asked why ho went away when I did so; He said he thought it better not to encourage me to flirt that way.

Then 1 raised my hand to strike him. Ho caught me in his arms and A HUMOROUS HOLD UP. A California Kobber Plunders Two Stages at One Time. Santa Barbara, Special. The two stages running between here and Los Oliver were both: robbed yesterday by a lone highwayman; who introduced some novel features into his "hold up" of the passengers.

The highwayman, who was masked, first stopped a farmer, ami his son, who- were taking a load of wheat to Santa Barbara, lie got a few dollars from them, and then made them put on masks and sit on their load by the road- side. In a short time up came the Los Oliver stage with six passengers on board. The highwayman covered the the driver with a Winchester and ordered the passengers to step out. which they did promptly. They, as well as the driver, were forced to put on masks, when he candy went through them, taking all val-boxes and cutting the mail pouches.

The. driver was made to take a position by the roadside, behind -ft bend, so that the stage from Santa Barbara couldn't see his vehicle, and the robbed passengers had to climb upon the top of the stage and roost there in their masks. Pretty soon the other stage hove in sight, when the fellow went through exactly the same programme with the passengers, masking them and standing them in a row. From one lady passenger he secured $45, andthe total amount he gained by his afternoon's work was over $100. The mails and express con- tamed few valuable letters, so he made a light haul.
