final The Bujfalo News 77 ursda A i 'gust 79 200 C7 Arts I COMMENTARY "News at 10 is slow out of the block Since the News at 10 on WB 49 with anchor Kelly Kraft pre miered on Monday opposite a taped Bills game on Channel 7 and taped Olympics on Channel 2 1 sure the station ex pect much of a rat ing And it get much of one either The hour long news cast opened the night with a 14 rat ing lost half its audi ence at 10:30 pm when it hit a 6 and ended the evening with a paltry 3 Meanwhile the com petition over at WNLO TV saw its 10 pm ratings improve in the middle of the half hour from 40 to 42 in the first half hour In other words the viewers who expected to see the usual 10 pm program on WNYO TV reacted as if they were involved in a horrendous first date It really that bad After some initial problems with the sound the inaugural WB news cast looked and sounded good and so did Kraft She is a solid cheerful news reader and the staff of reporters with Western New York backgrounds is decent too The top story Monday was a human interest piece on the deaths in lorida of an elderly couple who lived in our area de cades ago and were unable to es cape Hurricane path The rest of the opening news block was loaded with the usual local news as sortment of crime and disaster stories includ ing an alleged rape a pitbull attack a miss ing woman and a gas station robber who tried to escape to the Erie County air The newscast moves quickly the graphics and headlines are sharp and there are a lot of man (and wom an in the street interviews And oh yes the station has quickly picked up the local news ploy of reminding us how many interviews they get and how many stories well see on But on WB is half of tlie newscast from out of town It arrives from News Central in Bal timore where a slick anchor named Morris Jones delivers na tional news to all the Sinclair Broadcast affiliates like Channel 49 and where extended weather and sports reports come from Jones also has a segment titled in which he is free to react to some unusual news like how terrorists and the ederal Alan Pergament Reserve Bank are using the Inter net The weather also comes from Baltimore though WB 49 is tiy ing to camouflage the location of chief meteorologist Vytas Reid by having Kraft engage in some one way happy talk with him And Kraft also does about one minute of local sports if you call it that On Monday she talked about the Bills game Sun day and a Bison game before the national sports was delivered by a guy in Baltimore The opener also included a welcome to WB 49 from anchor Jones and ended with a light kick er in which Kraft introduced a re port on the naked display of Western New Yorkers shot by a photographer at the Albright Knox Art Gallery not sure if this is some thing to be proud said Kraft before noting that the gallery re ceived fewer than five complaints Undoubtedly WB 49 execu tives realize that starting a new newscast easy and they will be patient and hope it eventually will find a local following But get ting all the national news from Baltimore something to be proud of and an hour newscast at 10 pm will probably appeal to a very audience mail: apergamentbuffiwwscom Sahara Hotnights finally catches on By Matt Moore ASSOCIATED PRESS STOCKHOLM Sweden or going the Swedish legacy of AB pop anthems Sahara Hot blend of punk inspired guitar riffs and frenetic rhythms manifest the rawer version of rock being produced in this Scan dinavian country Success come overnight though Instead been a mea sured climb for the band which formed in 1994 from the first sin gles released on a local label to in ternational success The debut EP was fol lowed by a couple of singles Based on the strength of those recordings music giant BMG picked up the band and in 1999 released the debut LP a rough but ready blend of fast guitars and bass that sounded like an updated version of the Runaways with a healthy dose of in your face pop hooks Tire LP sold more than 55000 copies going gold in their native Sweden Success also came during the new Swedish musical renais sance when bands such as the Hives started gaining internation al fame and the Cardigans re ex erted their influence all of which challenged the perception of Swedish music as nothing more than bright pop jangles a la ABBA or the A Teens All of this has filtered down to the Sahara Hotnights By 2003 the quartet guitar ist vocalist Maria Andersson bassist Johanna Asplund guitar ist Jennie Asplund and drum mer Josephine orsman from Robertsfors in northern Sweden had logged months of touring across Europe and playing the major festivals in cluding Roskilde and released the critically lauded which also went gold in Sweden They also visited the United States playing at CBGBs the seminal music club along the Bowery in New York the club where the Ramones Tele vision the Voidoids and Talk ing Heads among others cre ated American punk The Swedish government picked up the tab to send the band along with other groups to play the venue was our paid ticket to bassist Asplund said in a recent interview we got upgraded on plane added Andersson Asplund said the tour exposed new Swedish bands to a wider audi ence but added it was mostly Swedj ish journalists abroad who attended not the American music media rf the point of going to the States to play when the Swedish me dia has more reporters there from Sweden than she asked The sojourn paid off with Rolling Stone last year naming them one of its great new and main stream music media in Britain and the United States fawning over the 1970s inspired punk sounds that evoke the Ramones Blondiej and the Clash 7 Thanks in part to that adulation the band recently completed a sec ond US tour to promote its new al bum Independent Pelivery
