A AVOMAX BAXIC CASHIER. Mnry Coxtn, of Snn Jimp, Opens Field of I'sefulncsH for Her Sex.

A new business career has opened for woman. She is now a cashier, says tho New York Herald. Mrs. Mary A. Costa, of San Jose.

has just taken the position of cashier in a bank. Mrs. Costa's husband Is tho principal owner of the bank, but that docs not de tract from the fact that the lady tills the position as well as any salaried employo would. The position is in nowise ornamental nnd Mrs. Costa has undertaken a task that at no time can be termed iight.

She has demonstrated that she has no fear of her ability failing to justify expectations. The pistols always at her hand show she is, too, prepared for robbers. Out in San Jose a bank such as the new cashier otliclates In has a multitudinous amount of detail to consider. It is not only difficulties in English the cashier must meet, but in this particular Institution she has to confront financial sorrow in Italian, with an occasional experience of German and French. To understand how to handle an emergency that arises under the auspices of one's own tongue is not so difficult a task, but when you have to meet It from the standnoint of other countries it is decidedly different.

That is why Mrs. Costa demonstrates that while she Is not a new woman in the ordinary significance of the term she is certainly a very capable one. The woman cashier Is a born and bred American, and is a native of San Jose. Her girlhood went on in a country town, a few miles from San Jose, and her education was of that quality which the pupil of the district school succeeds In gaining. After marrying, her business instincts, which had been struggling for recognition for quite a period, began to assert themselves, and presently she became the secretary of her husband, an.l soon came to be his principal business assistant.

The charms of business grew unon her and her knowledge received great additions. From an embryo woman of business she became fully Hedged and an adept In the mysteries of the various transactions which her husband, as a financier, engaged in. Mrs. Costa is as attentive to her home as she is to business. There is in all San Jose no plcasanter home than that which the head of the banking house has in his mind's eye.

The delicate touch of the woman, the evidence of dainty feminine taste in the adornment, are everywhere visible about tho house. It has every mark of the home of a womanly woman, and it all goes to show that a woman may be bright and businesslike nnd at the same time attain the attributes which have won her place in the domestic world. The fact of Mrs. Costa's becoming a genuine bank cashier has caused something of a sensation in banking circles and has suggested a yet larger sphere for woman's actions. Another thing which Mrs.

Costa's partnership suggests is that no reason now exists why women should not become tho business partners of men. just as they become their business employes. It has been suggested that one of these days we may see a sign reading "Miss Jones. Smith Co." And all this is not theory, but the actual sort of a fact, of which Mrs. Costa's assumption of the position of bank cashier has caused San Joseans and many other residents of California to talk.

They believe that It has actually broken the Ice of a new field for women: that there Is no lino of business which she is physically able to perform that will hereafter be of an ogrelsh nature to her.
