A Slander Nailed. Editor Pierce has been making a great ado over the fact that the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader had been awarded the contract for printing Commissioner of Immigration McClure's book on the "Resources of He has covertly insinuated that there was collusion between the Argus and the territorial administration, and has even gone so far beyond the bounds of decency as to charge that the matter was a big steal. Read what a Republican paper, the Pierre Free Press, says in regard to the slander: "Not because we doubted, but to satisfy the doubts of others, the Free Press called at Mr. McClure's office aud asked him regarding the printing contract. lie replied that he had noticed the attack of the Dakota department of the Pioneer Press, but did not deem it worthy of any reply.

He said, however, that the records of his office were public property, and thereupon showed us six bids for printing the book; two from Chicago, two from St. Faul and two from Dakota, and on examining them we found that -the bid of the Argus-Leader was the lowest, and was properly accepted. Any person desiring to investigate can doubtless have the same privilege accorded us of examining them. The bid of the Argus- Leader would make the cost of the book copies of 500 pages each) about 15, 400. To further satisfy ourselves we took the time and trouble- to estimate the cost, or at least what we would be willing to duplicate the work for, and found that we could not afford to do the' work for a less sum, and there- would be but a small profit at that, considering the work, worry and responsibility.

This statement is entirely voluntary on our part. As a man and neighbor we esteem Mr. McClure highly, and know him to lie above any underhanded deal. We have no sympathy with his politics, and have never received a dollar of patronage from his office and have no expectations of receiving any, being of the opposite political faith, but we do not propose standing by and seeing an honest man slandered without raising our voice."
