buy a second Buffalo station went south and the new Amherst building it was supposed to move to ended up being part of a sale of its radio properties Ml in all things go as ex pected this past season at WUTV Channel 29 But General Manager Don Mor an got some good news earlier in the month when his company Sin clair Broadcasting purchased WNYO TV Channel 49 the WB affiliate that has been competing for programming and advertising sales And he expects improvement from ox this season and is en thused about all the new syndicated programs on its fall schedule Moran is loaded with syndicated programs partly because 4JJ million deal to buy Channel 23 fell through and left him with more programs than places to put them Eventually some could land on WNYO His big acquisition is reruns of which were scheduled to replace at 10:30 pm weekdays un til ABC kicked up a fuss about it running in prime time It still could land after but certainly will run at 6:30 pm before at 7 pm He also plans to run Suddenly at 11:30 pm weekdays and has weekend spots tor reruns as well as first run programs such as Gene and a new action series in the Xena mold of Mid of course there is the new Cindy Margolis show from Miami in which the cyberqueen hosts a party at 1 am after Howard Stem Radio It started a few weekends ago Channel 29's biggest problems are in the daytime where the for gettable and and bombed this past sea son in which a psy chiatrist visits the dysfunctional homes of the weirdos willing to ex pose their lives on national televi sion will air at 5 pm Starting Oct 2 reruns will air at 12:30 pm Moran concedes that Channel 29 clearly has fallen behind WNYO Channel 49 in the daytime race passed on all those shows" Moran says of Channel daytime success with Jenny Jones Sally Jes se Raphael and Jerry Springer chose not to go in that direction We didn't want that type of pro gramming We wanted to stay a rung above that Obviously viewers want it because it does good ratings for sell about one minute of ads inside in the ox's midseason half hour comedy hit And it only gets 90 seconds in side the long running hour hit Prime time is primarily impor tant because it gives a station an im age wc would have like to have higher ratings in said Moran has not been a good With the exception of and another midseason com edy series bombed at a time it desperately needed a new new soap for the age 18 34 crowd Clearly ox is relying on big name writers and producers to res cue the network Moran is realistic saying he fond of Lone idea and terribly fond of but he sees a future in the female superhero who heads His favorite new ox shows are riday night chills about weird happenings on an In ternet site and an anthology series with visions of have struggled on ridays since we moved said Moran Moran envision good things from new comedies the new title of the John Goodman series and both of which are undergoing massive reconstruction only things that are the same in is that his char acter is still gay and he is still John said Moran UPN scores in ratings with rap show Having a small yard puts a damper on some gardening enthusiasm but for a group of award winning growers in Cheektowaga having a small working space a hindrance The Carefree Park Homeowners Associ ation Garden Club has been giving awards for the past three years to residents who garden in this manufactured home park Most of these folks have moved here from apartments and now that they have space their garden dreams are being more than fulfilled This year Kathy Szewczyk was honored for best perennials Her lot is roughly 45 feet by 100 feet and her home takes up most of that space In the space that remains there are five different well tend ed blooming gardens Szewczyk started gardening seven years ago She started by planting marigolds and strawflowers be cause that was what her mother planted Two years later Szewczyk planted her first perennial The suc cess of that garden prompted Szewczyk to create more and when the other gardens' began to get built The bed in front yard is her blue white and pink garden Originally there were other colors in this bed but Szewczyk ripped them out to create this color combination Here Szewczyk has deep purple balloon flowers white blue and mauve pincushion plants white and blue bellflowers Shasta daisies globe thistle and white balloon flowers Szewczyk uses silver accents in this garden snow in summer and silver mounds are a few The focal point of this garden is a trellis with 2 year old clematis already covering it and in full purple bloom In the fall Szewczyk cuts everything back and cov ers the garden beds with mulched leaves she picks up with her leaf blower In the spring she removes the mulch Also in the spring Szewczyk and her neighbor Carol Gerasimowicz another award winner start plants indoors Szewczyk uses small greenhouse flats and Carol has a sunroom Between the two they grow almost everything they need In the back of the house is a shade garden Although only partially shad ed this spot provides plants and peo ple with a respite from the summer sun Here Szewczyk has lots of differ ent shades of green and lots of tex ture There is blue and white helps attract birds and keeps the water from stagnating This long garden bed acts as a break between properties and provides a beautiful private setting for sitting in the summer night's air Throughout the gardens are wonderful pieces of dry driftwood gathered from lakes Erie and Ontario and there is a huge rock Jeff hauled back from a visit to Zoar Valley Garden beds surround the house Many roses butterfly bushes echinacea pennyroy al and coreopsis There are small evergreens interspersed here and there and this year the Washburns planted some locust trees to give them some shade In addition to creating beauty the gar dens around the house help hide the skirt (the bottom part of the house) In the corners and all over the shed Debbie has stenciled leaves vines garden accents that add to the overall design On the back of the shed is a trellis with a year old wisteria It started out on the pole that came with it has moved to a trellis and next year Jeff plans on building an arbor for the ever grow ing plant A few feet from the house is a long narrow bed with more perennials This garden has been dubbed moment of peace Named this by a neighbor with a sense of humor this garden remind ed her of a double grave head to head or best combination and use of area Carol Gera simowicz won this year Her garden is different from the others in that she uses annuals along with her pe rennials When Gerasimowicz first moved here there were big bushes in the front of her house Her sons came over and pulled them out with their truck and now there is a neat colorful front garden bed Gerasimowicz planted breath spider flow ers clcome and lilies of the valley She saves seeds from year to year and along with her neighbor Szewczyk starts her own plants in spring In the side yard Gerasimowicz has an oval shaped bed that started with two small pots of Shasta daisies When a tree in this area fell over Gerasimowicz covered the hole with dirt and that became another garden bed Now it boasts a beautiful group of black eyed Susans marigolds lambs ear perennial salvia gayfeath er columbine hollyhocks and daisies These are daisies Gerasi 7 A Jackie Albarella The moving water helps attract birds and keeps the water from stagnating This long garden bed acts as a break between properties and pro vides a beautiful pri vate setting for sitting in the summer air ladder a variegated ladder white gayfeather and columbine The whole area gives you a sense of calmness and coolness On the other side of the house is more clematis pots with plants of various colors and beautiful black eyed Susan vines that cover the side of the house These vines are annuals but looking at their size and the many flowers in bloom you would think they might have been there for years and years The other gardens in yard are filled with lobelia love lies bleeding zinnia four cosmos and yarrow There is a surprising amount of color in all of these perennial beds Szewczyk says the blooming is staggered and her columbine blooms all summer right through August The secret to this con tinuous bloom is deadheading Szewczyk deadheads everything This ritual is done every day and Szew czyk says this keeps her plants healthy and blooming Debbie and Jeff Washburn won best overall gar den They have lived at Carefree five years and add something new to their garden every year Across the back of their yard is a long I shaped bed This garden is striking and can be seen from everywhere It is also a perennial garden full of mallow yarrow bee bahn angel trumpet mums lilacs and bronze fennel In the middle there is a small water garden complete with water hyacinths but this is actually a birdfeeder that Jeff and Debbie put a fountain in The moving water mowicz got free from the Sunoco sta tion down the street they have grown terrifically and appear in a few gardens in the neighborhood Gerasimowicz has another bed in front of her sun room This area has ladder obedient plant balloon flower and coreopsis This is her favorite gar den She likes to sit in the sunroom and look out over all of the plants Gerasimowicz has a great sense of pride and tradition in her gardens This house was her aunt's before Gerasimowicz lived here and her aunt was quite a gardener She was a long tune member ol the Hamburg Garden Club and won many prizes What a fitting tribute to aunt that now here in her former house her niece is carrying on the tradition of gardening and winning contests forget that the Cornell Cooperative Exten sion is having its fall Garden aire from 10 beautiful hard wood floor caused by a dog that apparently wasn't as housebroken as we thought The floor is finished with polyurethane Is there a way to remove this ugly stain? A black color means the stain is in the wood not just in the finish Stains of this type can he caused by water leaks from plants or other sources as well as pets Repairing these stains can be tricky If you want to try how to proceed: Clean the spot and surrounding area with medium grade (No 1) steel wool Wipe with mineral spir its (paint thinner) to remove any wax or grease) Scrub the stain with vinegar and let the vinegar stand for several minutes If the spot doesn't disappear try two or three more applications of vinegar If several vinegar treatments remove the stain rinse and dry the area and try a stronger chemical a solution of oxalic acid Oxalic acid a bleach that is sold at some paint stores and home cen ters must be used with care Pour or sponge the oxalic acid on the blemish and let it stand for about an hour then sponge the spot with clear water Repeat the acid treatment if necessary then rinse and dry the area and sand lightly If all color has been bleached from the wood touch it up with a pigmented oil stain that matches the original finish Getting a good match will probably require some experimenting with the stain on scrap wood When the wood is colored to your satisfaction restore the shine to the area by buffing it with wax or touch it up with a couple of thin coats of polyurethane A warning: If the blemish re mains after the treatments de scribed above or if you are not sat isfied with the results it might be necessary to replace the stained flooring Painting brick I have a brick house that gets very hot in summer due to a sunny exposure I was thinking of using one of the new radiant paints on the interior walls and ceilings to keep the heat out Can you give me any informa tion on these paints?
