Tuesday September 1 1998 Page4 The best concert bargain Edgefest gives fans their worth By ANDREW PARKS NeXt Correspoatat Hordes of killer bees a pleth ora of metalheads and alt rock kids alike a little conga dancing and a lot of unidentified flying objects: That was Edgefest in a nutshell save some exaggera tions After waiting for what seemed like an eternity at the main stage the festival hit the fan 2 Skinnee J's hit the stage com plete in "karate garb all six of them Guevara set the re cord straight by telling us sistance is futile" Well it was for the put together the best set of the day surprising most of the crowd who were expecting one hit wonders The defy classification The closest comparison could be eclectic outfit the Beastie Boys These guys are genuinely having fun besides earning dinero and took Buffalo along for their wild ride Possum Dixon followed Sure "Holding Onto was all right but yawn to the rest of the attempts The same fate hit Buffalo Tom later an other victim of just one hit and it ortunately the other perform ers outdid themselves Sprung Monkey came off a little more metal to most fans expecting "Get Outta part deuce But it was a welcome headbanging event able to get bodies flying more than those cute little risbees that seemed to hit everyone in the head God Lives Underwater came off more aggressive than expect ed also Their techno guitar sound got the crowd mov with the new track Your and some old school beats and Choice preached not an The Urge earned runner up for performance of the day with their mixed bag of funk metal hip hop and ska Steve call me Ewing belted out a voice that varied from a snarl to a soothing out the cooing They blasted through some old material and such new hits off of as to and a superb Right minus Nick Hexum of 311 Even more shocking are the anomaly which calls itself They Might Be Giants A motley crew of sorts they got the crowd to mambo and start that conga line I would have never thought it possible for hardcore metalheads to be dancing up a storm along side teeny boppers but the Gi ants made it all possible Their for the Planet of the drove the crowd into a frenzy Bringing the chaos to an end was headliner Gravity Kills The band put up a sonic assault and blistering set well past the half hour limit Obvious choice cuts and were per formed alongside portions of their disc A fitting end to a long day Gravity Kills got the job done Edgefest brought together all kinds of people united by the common language of music all for $10 There was no way of go ing wrong here All the bands were super cool and interacted with the fans after they finished playing Music was the key here not money and that the way it should be? Andrew Parks will be a senior at West Seneca East Senior High School A late addition the Amazing Royal Crowns (soon to be known as just the Amazing Crowns thanks to a lawsuit from Royal Crown Revue) brought their form of rockabilly to a confused audience Their vocalist ordered all to "dance not do any of that moshing And dance we did eventually The Crowns are a little Jon Spencer Blues Explo sion that Elvis vibe and a little Horton Heat thrown in for good measure Choice and Seven Mary Three came later with inspired yet predictable sets Seven Mary Three had their Left lead a Inger David Reilly of God Lives Underwater was part of an unexpected aggressive surprise at Edgefest They Might Be Giants right got even the hardcore members of the crowd mamboing dnuKmi An view of the home run race By DAVID SHAROS Chicago Tribooe Baseball fans are getting caught up this year in the gobs of home runs being knocked out by Mark McGwire of St Louis Ken Griffey Jr of Seattle and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs We recently caught up with Sosa How do you explain all these homers? A the way been playing plus more patient more disciplined more confident in myself And the team has a winning spirit helped me also changed my stance a bit and lowered my hands 1 swing more in the hitting zone now and hit 'to right field more Why do hitters get hot and cold? 1 can't explain it If I could I get cold When not hitting I try to get a base hit to right field or go to center if I'm in a slump What separates a home run from a single or double? A I can't tell you except that I feel it when I hit it well known practically every home run that was going to go over the wall you can just feel it What physical qualities does it take to hit homers? A You need strength in your forearms and wrists plus a quick bat Size matter that much A lot of the home run hit ters were men only 5 foot 10 or 1 1 inches A lot is inside you How will you feel if McGwire or Griffey beats you in the homer race? on TV when I can If I hear anything about how they did I go looking for it it like to hit a ho mer? A really exciting when you hit one You go home after the game and if the game win ning hit a great feeling Is that why you hop at the plate when you see one go? A Yes I know when hit it well A I would feel great said all along McGwire has the best op portunity I've never seen a guy hit a ball so hard in my life good too He's my idol Do you check out how the oth er guys are doing? A depressing side effect the acne drug Accutane By EILEEN NECHAS Md DENSE ran IMBUdar Ever since I've been using the acne drug called Accutane 1 been myself I know it sounds crazy but I feel de pressed and sad Nobody believes me when I tell them I think the medicine is causing these feel ings Could I be right?
