The Inaugural Address was brief and pointed In view of Gov action in pardoning penitentiary in mates Mr views on that subject are somewhat significant He believes that it is physically im possible for any Governor to give every case where pardon is asked personal attention and so advises the establishment of an advisory board of pardons The Governor enters upon the dis charge of his duties under favorable auspices and will doubtless succeed in adding to his already great popu larity Han Geo Williams Representative Williams is differ ent from his fellow members in that he is a colored man Notwithstand ing this ho found a constituency in Hamilton county who felt that they could trust him to represent their in terests in the State Legislature In that capacity lie is now in Columbus One day last week he walked into a restaurant kept by a man named Beck and asked for a dinner He was curtly informed by tho waiter that they did not entertain colored men Mr Williams asked to see Mr Beck but was told that ho could not be seen and that it was by his express orders that the dinner was refused Mr iiliams went to the Neil House for his dinner His fel low members are justly incensed at his treatment They consider the treatment of Mr Williams an insult to the Legislature and know it is a violation of the Civil Rights bill The following resolutions have been offered by Mr Walker of Logan county: WllEKEAH Tho Hon George WilliamH a inemlier of this House has Ihx ii denied a tinittunce to and enter tainment in a place of public entertain ment in this city iind Whereas Tills fa an attack on the rights and privileges of a member of this House as well as a violation of the laws of the United States therefore belt Resolved That a committee of live members of tins House be appointed to inquire into the facts and report the same without delay Messrs Walker Koons Greene Davis and Hopkins were appointed said committee Mr Beck the keeper of the restaurant says that tho refusal of his clerk to allow Mr Williams to have his dinner was not in accord with his orders The Job Department is well supplied with NEW AND GOOD MATERIAL tiShi Glintott Republican Matters la Maine Affairs have reached a crisis in Maine The Commercial tells the story editorially thus: all the Republicans In Maine seem to know what the were about We were wondering what their were doing The usionists have been audacious but imbecile The high handed old Governor after undertaking the execution of a fraud submitted questions to the Supreme Court and having secured the declaration of the law against him refused to obey it When his time came to retire Iris cotinted in Legislature went through I with all the forms of usurping au thority displayed tbeir fraudulent intent most grossly rode rough shod overall objections and then failed to find a quorum It was at once a fraud and a fizzle The old war Governor Garcelon gone the arms returned to the arse nal a military dictatorship estab lished to do nothing the representa tive of a Senate without a quorum assuming the duties of Governor without a commission the usionists thoroughly disgusted and demoraliz the moment had arrived fora bold stroke This was delivered last evening by the appearance of the Ilepubli cans entitled to seats on the face of the returns who proceeded to organ ize the Legislature in a business like manner and wtll doubtless bold fort They have the law and facts the jxwcr and possession Sherman Is The Man We believe in Grant and have a great admiration for Blaine but as a candidate for President in 1880 we are in favor of John Sherman I le bus been in public life a long time In the House of Representatives he was a leader and was Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means In the Senate lie was a leader and Chairman of its most important committee that of inance As Secretary of the Treasury his record is all the recommendation that he needs Give us Sherman A Slander of Jim Blaine el Maine Despite the opinions of tho Su preme Court in the premises the usionists in Maine have organized the Legislature Of course there has been a great deal of hard feeling among all parties The latest dodge of tho Garcelon gang as to charge i the Republicans with an attempt to bribe one of the Democrats to refuse I to take his seat In this connection it has been i broadly insinuated that Senator Blaine was privy to this attempted bribery On hearing the report he telegraphed the following character istic denial: the form or phrase of the accusation I pronounce it an un qualified calumny and merely a part of tho monstrous wicked ami un puralelcd conspiracy to deprive a free people of their suffrage by fraud forgery and perjury I am busy night and day in the task of thwart ing the conspiracy and it is merely a part of their dastardly and despicable course to invent somo form of slan der against me I have not seen the charge but I know it is a lie out of whole cloth and I cannot now be diverted from the real work in hand to do more than denounce the cal umny and its 86TThe Annual Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic Department of Ohio will be conven ed in the City Council Chamber reasons why General Gar field was unanimously chosen United States Senator by the recent Republican caucus Some attribute it to the influence of Secretary Sher man and others to the personal and political popularity of Mr Garfield himself Those who take the latter view are correct General Garfield has been prominently before the people of Ohio for twenty years hav ing entered the State Senate in 1860 Soon after he was appointed Colonel of the 43d Regiment I nnd Was promoted until before the close of the war he was a full Major Gen eral He has been continuously in the House of Representatives since 1862 and while not so old as John Sherman his public service has been such that he is almost as well and favorably known General Garfield owes his pro ri motion to his own sterling integrity his pure patriotism and his eminent ability He was a leader in the 4 House and will take high rank in the Senate He is yet a comparatively youn(f man and if spared life and health
