C. Phillips of Bement, Entertain Relatives Sunday. BEMENT, Nov. 29 Mr. and Mrs.

M. C. Phillips" celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in their home here, Sunday. A sumptuous goose and chicken dinner was enjoyed at noon by Mr. and Mrs.

Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Garver and children of Deland, Mr. and Mrs. James Phillips and children, who live on the home place four miles northwest of Bement, Mr.

and Mrs. Frank Phillips and children, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bogue, Mr. and Mrs.

William Fairbanks, and Miss Grace Phillips, all tt Bement. Large yellow chrsanthemums were used for decorations. M. C. Phillips was born near Cedar-town, April 26, io44, and moved from Georgia to Mississippi in 1S53.

In February, 1862, he with two brothers, enlisted in the southern army, from necessity, not from choice, as their sympathies were all with the North. Their father also was an abolitionist, but was exempt from service in the Southern army as he was too old to fight. In Confederate Army. Mr. Phillips was a member of Co.

33rd Mississippi infantry and his officers were First Colonel Hurst; Second Colonel Drake, First Captain Zachariah Booth and Second Captain Edward Simmons. When asked to tell of some of his experiences during service, he said they probably were like those of other soldiers except that he had to fight for a cause with which he was not in sympathy. But the incident which stands out most in his memory is the forced march from Grenada, to Jackson, when they had nothing to eat but hard tack, for four days, and only three pieces of that a day. They were marching to help Pemberton, who was penned up by Grant in Vicksburg. When they neared Canton, about IS miles from Jackson, they pitched their camp in a clearing and- ate the first meal they had had for four days.

When asked where he got it, he said they killed wood-rats and it was the sweetest meat he ever ate, that they ate it without salt and it tasted better to him, then, than the goose would at his golden wedding, and he is particularly fond of goose. He explained that the wood-rats were more like squirrels than rats and built their nests in piles of brush. These brush-piles, the soldiers set fire to. and as the wood rats ran out, killed them. Settled in limine.

Mr. Phillips took "French leave" of the Southern army in 1S64 and came to Milmine, March 16, of that year. Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

James Watson and was born in Pickaway county, May 30, 1845, and moved with her parents to Illinois in 1S56. They lived on a farm four miles northwest of Bement and here Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were married Isov. 29, 186o, by Moses McDavid, pastor of the Christian church, now known as the Willow Branch church.

They lived on the "home place" for 41 years. One year they lived in Indiana and eight years ago moved in to Bement. Of the eight children horn to them seven are living, James Phillips and Francis Phillips of Bement, Otha of Bonners Ferry, Bert of Sawieil, Mrs. Charles Garver of Deland. (Mrs.

A. F. Elledge of Sawtell, and Miss Grace Phillips at home. There are 13 grandchildren. ildoTIeyWally Fugitive Captured Asleep Along Railroad Track in White Plains, Ky.

NEW YORK, Nov. 29. T. St. John Gaffney, until recently consul-general for the United States at Munich, arrived here Saturday on the steamship Oscar II.

from Copenhagen. He said-he would go to Washington Mondair or Tuesday to take up the charges against him with the State Department Of these charges he said was officially ignorant. In a written statement given out by him on his arrival heer he said he was attacked in his absence 3,500 miles away, condemned without a hearing and his resignation, asked. The statement in part follows: Trouble Starteil Anp. 12.

"Mr. Gaffney thinks the trouble started with a story which the Morning Post of London printed Aug. 12. based on a wire from its correspondent in Berne, to the effect that he had been rude to Americans and British in Munich. Fleet street correspondents cabled to papers in New York, one of which also printed that a New York Irishman attempted to send a secret letter to him by the Austrian consul-general.

"Mr. Gaffney said that as far as he can classify them the attacks are: "Rudeness to Americans and British in Munich. "Smuggling secret letter. Berlin paper which attacked Wilson. "i ining bir Roger Casement.
