A recent investigation of.the Xogales region, in southern Arizona, by F. Scnrader. of the survey, revealed a de-post of alunlte. Analysis of rock samples collected from the Evening Star copper prospect by IMr. Scnrader showed large percentages of alumina and potash, and while the discovery of the alunite was only Incidental to the investigation of the copper deposits, it has served to suggest that other alunite deposits may be found in this formation, which occupies an area of many square miles.

Mr. Schrader states that the property belt in which the alunite was found "wouFd commend Itself for prospecting in case a practical process is developed for the reducton of alunite to soluble notash salts and in the light of the fact that a study of the alunite deposits near Marysvale, Utah, and in other parts of the western states by the United States geological survey indicates that the mineral alunite may become at some future time an mportant source of alumina." THIN MUDFILLS EMMA MINE SHAFT Silver City. X. Sept. 3. News has been received here that while driving a drift in the Emma mine in the direction of the Hanover mountain, a great mass of thin mud was encountered which flowed through the tunnel and rose over 100 feet in the shaft.

It was too thick to handle with pumps and had to be bailed out. It is said to be the first time such a thing has happened in the history of mining at Fierro. Some time ago a vast quantity of water was struck on the 400 foot level and large pumps had to be ordered to empty the mine. Ore in the mine continues to carry big values. SALT LAKEMEN GET ST.
