"Basically the price" said Tom Kirwan editor in chief of Value Retail News "Wholesalers have been able to undercut competition by going in to lower rent situations or going into buildings that are inexpensive to build And they are able to pass those savings onto their custom ers" Kirwan said there's a downside to that" he added have to pay to become a member Customers have to dodge those trucks the lines are very long and the securi ty can be very intimidating Prices at both membership clubs got mixed reviews from cus tomers last week it is cheaper it's not bv much" said Marvin Huling of Mid land Bank of Buffalo and regarded by bankers as the largest bank in Asia outside Japan reported today that its earnings rose 1 1 percent in 1989 Despite economic slowdowns in all of the major markets it said its full year profits rose to S612 million from $550 million in 1988 But the earnings report man aged to disappoint some investors who hoped it would reveal one of the British best kept se crets the size of the bank's in ner reserves inancial analysts estimate the reserves anywhere between $13 billion and $58 billion Expectations that the bank would end 125 years of secrecy and disclose the size of its reserves in the earnings report began grow ing when the company acquired a 15 percent stake in Mid land Bank in 1 987 The Bank of England rejected the Hongkong 1981 bid for the Royal Bank of Scotland but financial analysts speculate the Hong Kong giant plans to try to break into Britain's inner banking circles again through a merger with Midland The move would require St Cheektowaga William A Vil lepigue is the manager of the branch which is expected to have 10 employees Pyramid may be facing competition for Bonwit The Pyramid Co which has submitted a bid for five of 16 Bonwit Teller stores could face competition for the stores from potential bidders such as Tiffany Co and Donald Trump sources close to the situation have said Retailing consultant William Ruben who was chief executive of Bonwit for five years speculated that new bids from investors would be for all 16 stores and may range from $25 million to $30 million Pyramid a Syracuse based company that operates 16 malls in New York and Massachusetts in cluding the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga reached a formal agreement riday to purchase the assets of the upscale clothing store from its financially troubled par ent company the LJ Hooker Corp The developer also plans to open two new stores in Syracuse and Albany The price tag for the stores in cluding the one at the Galleria was not disclosed but industry sources estimate the debt free cash deal to be about $17 million Pyr amid will receive the stores the Bonwit Teller name and the liabil ities for five stores But the sale must be reviewed by US Bankruptcy Court Judge Tina Brozman According to bankruptcy law other bidders have until March 29 to submit higher bids for the stores If bid is approved the developer could open a new store in the
