Press AA plans to hire 118 inspectors to check cargoes By TOM WELLS Associated Press MIAMI In the wake of the ValuJet crash the ederal Aviation Administration is hiring scores of new inspectors to check for hazardous cargo aboard passenger airliners a top official said today The AA also plans to pursue criminal charges against anyone who improperly sends' hazardous materials aboard commercial air craft said Bruce Butterworth the head of the security operations going to see some of the biggest criminal cases ever Butterworth told members of the National Transportation Safety Board at hearings into the crash The AA has been criticized by its own in spectors and relatives of the victims of light 592 for lax oversight of potentially deadly car go Improperly stored oxygen generating canis ters in a cargo hold are being blamed for a deadly fire that disabled the plane shortly after takeoff May 11 It plunged into the Everglades killing all 110 people aboard ValuJet has blamed its outside maintenance company for not putting safety caps on the canisters An airline executive acknowledged in earlier testimony that the carrier was responsi ble for the work of its contractors Butterworth say who would be tar geted in any criminal cases but previous testi mony from the AA indicated those facing charges could range from the shipper of the materials to the people who loaded it on a plane if they had knowledge it was illegal The ValuJet crash also is the subject of a criminal probe by federal authorities Butterworth and other AA officials who have testified before the safety board conceded that hazardous materials inspections have de clined sharply in the past three years because staffers have had to deal with terrorism and other threats In an effort to improve its inspections the AA will hire 118 new employees for its haz ardous materials program including 110 inspec tors Butterworth said It currently has 300 in spectors When asked by safety board how the AA clothes and others signaled for help through ti nv ventilation shafts as an inferno hot enough to melt steel framing roared through a downtown high rise killing 39 people At least 80 others were injured in Wednesday fire the British worst in 39 years Officials said most of the dead were found on the 13th to 15th floors of the building located in a popular tourist district One fire fighter was and replen ished a staff depleted by waves of cuts under Tak got a great general manager there in Eric an Argyle spokesman said from San Antonio proud of what they did in a year The station is in much better shape than when we took it over invested a lot in that market If you go into that sta tion now you see a marked dif ference in how many people work The Argyle spokesman said he expected that Gannett would provide stability for WGRZ TV think Gannett will own that station for a long long he said In addition to its television stations Gannett Broadcasting has cable operations in five states
