ENTERTA NMENT 1 By JE SIMON Newt Critic be bored be puzzled be grossed out And probably howl at some ofthe self impor tant myth making fatuosity You might as well break down and see anyway Believe me never seen anything like it visual is what rank Herbert calls direc tor David Lynch's version of classic SCI I cult novel all of that Herbert lie People fight each other encased in ever changing crystal cubes Gigantic sandworms burrow through the innards of the arid desert planet the short ones are 150 meters long There are panoramic vistas in the film of Griffithian size This whole vision of the future is more like dark satanlc of Victorian nightmare than the futuristic user friendly banality of things in Lucas land Production designer Anthony sets have a 19th century complexity and luxuriance a vision of the future where monstrosity is either physical grossness or kitsch on a cosmic scale The film chewed up $50 million of Dino DeLaurentis and money Andy unlike "Cotton you can almost see where the money went Lynch is a phenomenal and incredibly peculiar tal ent perhaps the most alarming to hit American film in the past 10 years His film is a piece of biodegradable gothic weirdness that haunts the midnight shows And his film Elephant was a magnificent piece bf film making both profoundly moving and darkly weirdly beautiful Everybody knew make a like this The question how did he get away with it with the rath er less adventurous Dino De Moneybags saying yay or nay? Geations hold court in 1 S' i Easy The actual line producer was his daughter Raffaella DeLaurentis and Daddy about to rain on his little parade during her first big venture into the family biz still amazing when you think about it This thing kid stuff no cultist and I had an easier time threading my way through Alain Year at than I had here There seem to be more interior monologues in this thing than in Eugene "Strange There were times when I simply the foggiest notion what was going on I always knew who the good guys and the bad guys were but after that we non folks are on our own The dyed in the wool cultist behind me pro nounced it all disappointing but I have a feeling that all of her fellow cultists will see the film no matter what Luckily there is the incredible look and atmosphere of the film to keep you aroused the sheer monumen tality of it keeps you on the alert Rock star Sting of the Police is good as a villain but he around much Kenneth McMillan is even better as the scarred postulant super villain and around a bit more The hero is Kyle MacLachlan who looks like a sort of Hollywood Kennedy clone which I gather from talking to Herbert is pretty much what he had in mind The rest of the cast seems a bit nonplussed Dean eyebrows are so thick it looks as if he past ed two raccoons on his forehead Jose errer is Jose errerish and rancesca Annis and Sean Young wood enly take care of the exotic pulchritude comer None of this stops the non cultist from col lecting wondrously funny lines for future out of context merriment My favorite was: walk without rhythm and we attract the worms go for the I know I might go for the thumper every time too I mean you have to be a dumb 400 meter long sandworm especially since walking is no mean trick As I said a remarkable film by a remarkable talent Why let a little incoherence and fatuosity both er you? a film to be SEEN as we go through life walking without rhythm and hoping that the worms will go for the thumper
