TnEATr.E. "We were pleased to see at this establishment last night Such a full and fashionable hfause fbr the purpose of vritucs3ing the phy of Evddne, and greeting the re-appearance of Miss Eliza Logan-, At a late hour it is impossible to dwell upon the merits of the piece or its trepreseotation. "We -wish rather to speak of Miss Looan as an actress. Few, if any, have surpassed this young lady the study of correct reading, -as will bo easily.ob-fcrveiJ by the proper emphasis and masterly manner with which she avails herself the uses of the text As an American actress, she stands deservedly high. She hasaeached that eminence; by dint of her own industry, through the severest drill, and that under the immediate eye of a western and American audience.

This fact should admonish the would-be wise of our land, that locality has little to do with intrinsic worth and talent; tliat talent, wherever found, and rightly nurtured, is same in all sections of the world. Miss L. has been, and wc trust will continue to be a general favorite amongst us. Of late, Trbni the tone of our eastern exchanges, we perceive she also occupies there a high standingin the profession. Her recent success is doubtless attribuLible not only to her growing popularity, but to a disposition, upon the part of our eastern play-goers, to sustain native talent, together with the laudable enterprise recently taken upon herself, since ths death of her father, in supporting a widowed mother with a large family.

Such a spirit is truly commendable; and we trust the lovers of the drama will not be unmindful that whilst they are ministering to their own amusement, they arc at the same time contributing towards the support of the widowand orphans. Should either of the above mentioned causes actuate them, they will also bear in mind that heretofore her father has contributed largely, througli Ids and energy, in securing for her. through his of friends, an extended patronage. Now that she is bereft of his aid, and is attended only by her mother who can only serve her as a protector, it wilt' ba'the hf6re requisite that her lends and admirers, to ensure Miocpss and render her present engagement profitable, should singly and jointly use their exertions in endeavoring to see that she is patronised, it. New Orleass Hixief Fim The gross proceeds of M.

The total amount of doua-, tions from all parts of the United States for the relief of the New Orleans sufferers is said to be for the Mobile sufferers, $21,032. Yellow Fetei: in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Sun. in recording the fact that the Hoard of Health leporU two fatal cases of yellow feverin that city, last week, remarks that the disease exists still in the neighborhood of South and Swanson streets, to which locality it was brought by the barque Mandarin; but it is of a mild type, and, in most instances, yields to medical treatment Many houses in the vicinity have been deserted, avd several factories closed. The disease, however, it is said, is confined almost exclusively to badly ventilated localities, to purify which the Hoard of Health is doing everything in its power, but it is supposed it will require a few heavy frosts to kill it off effectually.

New Ouleans Raos. It is stated that Air Stiles, of Springfield, New Jersey, a paper manufacturer, recently received from New Orleans a quantity of rags, from which he caught a lever supposed to be the yellow fever, and died in two days. 5" Keep it before the people that advertising Has enlaiged many a small business; lias reviled many dull business; llassaied many a loit business; las presened many a large business. At Paris, the identical guillotine of the Reign of Terror certified to be such by a government officer with the horrible sliding-knife and basket, was sold at auction for fifly francs, and directly after was committed to a bonfire by an immense crowd of people. ET learn from the Washington Star that the siiretjes of Collier, the late Collector of San Francisco, have paid over an aggregate of about $118,000 on account of the balauce due the Unjtcd Stales from that gentleman.

Value or Lash in London. A piece of land -100 feet square, on the northwest corner of Florish Lane, belonging to St. Thomas Hospital, has been let on a lease for eighty years, at a rent of 1,100 per-annum. This letting, if calculated at its free hold value, at the present late of consols, would represeut the extraordinary sum of .520,000 the acre. On the 17th of September, 1743, the first dramatic performance took place in thecityof New York by a company of comedian1? Horn London.

The theatre stood on the site of the present Pesf-ofiice. On the 5th of the same month, the first play in America, 'The Merchant or Venice," was informed in Williamsburg, Va. Ticiit Laclvo. The New York Mirror believes that more suffering and death are caused by this insane fashion of tight lacing, than by any other species of intemperance. A woman who destroys her form and health by cutting herself into the figure of a wasp, has no business to marry and become a breeder of deformities.

There should be some Spartan law condemning such simpleton spingtcrs to wither out their brief existence on the stem of unblessed-singleness. For such diseased anatomies to essay the maternal functions is a downright sin. 1 TELEGRAPHED FOR THH'TJNION AND AMEUICAN. 'Jackson, Sept 2GUi. The yellowfijyer continues very bad, about one hundred cases in the city.

The Epidemic. The weekly report, ending yesterday morning, at 7 o'clock, shows a gratifying and decided diminuation in the number of interments. For three weeks the number deaths has been steadily dimiuishinsr. The number of interments for the week ending of yellow fever, 1352: of diseases. 'l7C: total 1528.

For the week ending yesterday morning, the number of interments were, ot yellow lover, avv, other diseases; 131; total; 530. Tim ratio of decrease cannot be otherwise than in the highest degree satisfactory. If ifwill only continue for a week or two longer, we snail be enabled to chronicle the disappearance of the epidemic.

In private practice the number of cases has largely diminished. We, however, firmly believe, that if our absent fellow-citizens should imprudently return, or jf there should be a large influx of strangers or emigrants, that the disease would immediately resume its former fatality.

The virus still lurks in the atmosphere. Let none needlessly brave its wrath. 'Let all, who possibly can, keep away until an official promulgation shall assure them tliat they may return in safety. A1 O. JiuUetin, Sfjit.

18. jg?" Two of the more prominent feminine actors in the recent "Whole World's Convention," in New York, are thus graphically described by one of the papers of that city: The Kev. Miss Brown is one of the best specimens of the human beings who have of late years broken out of the sphere for which they were destined by nature, and who have aspired, not only to the station occupied by the sterner sex, but to the important privilege of wearing not her garments. She has a 'ery pleasing expressing of lace, and a remirkable sweet and musical voice. Her style of speaking is occasionally forcible, with figures, and very seldom wearies the listener.

Unlike the generality ol temperauce speakers, 01 twtn sexes, she scarcely ever indulges in anecdotes to illustrate liar arguments, but instead thereof she embellishes her speeches with quotations from Scripture very natural for a divine. Our reverend orator dresses very neatly, but unfortunately there is nothiug in her style tliat marks the profession to which sho belongs. In that time coming" (we wish they would fix the day,) it is to bo hoped some plan will be devised by which the female members of the ministry may be distinguished from the laity. In speaking she gesticulates very little, never hesitates for a word, flows on without hindrance except, of course, when interrupted by the applause of her audience. This, reader, is the portrait of the Rev.

Antoinette K. Prown. How like you the picture? Miss Stone was dressed on this occasion as slie always is, in the plainest and neatest style. She wore a striped silk dress, the skirts of which reached a little below the knees, leaving the distinctive bloomer pants visible. For the gratification of curious In such matters we may state here that Miss Stone docs not wear them gathered at the ankle after the Turkish fashion.

She never wears any jewelry, her head is never set off with any of head-dress, her hair falling straight upon her shoulders, except a small lock on each side, which is turring up under each ear. She has a clear, sweet voice, which, in the expression jf tender emotions, almost steals the' tears from the eyes of her hearers. Wherever Lucy goes she is sure or.i large audience and she is always the lion, or perhaps we should say lioness of tho occasion. Yet it must not be supposed that she is one of your furious, ranting orators. Not at all.

On the contrary, she is exceedingly mild in her manner, never gelsinto a pas-son, but speaks in a firm, tcrmined toue, and everything that she says is characterized by such an air of sincerity that, while you differ with lier in opinion, you must give her credit for that quality at least. Slit- is an abolitionist, a temperance advocate, a woman's Tights supporter, and we believe the is in favor of many of the isms of the day. Miss Lucy is evidently one of those women who imagines sin; has a mission to fulfil, aud who really believes is now working in the path which her Creator had marked out for her. Well, lot her think so every one haj a right to their own opinion. II.
