were mostly empty on its final day of business Saturday and the glitzy costume jewelry that once filled the glass display cases was going for a dollar a throw After 76 years in Herald Square the legendary Miracle on 34th Street competition with store was over The Gimbels chain was clos ing its flagship store after years of dwindling sales A branch in Man hattan also closed Saturday Developers plan to convert the stores into offices and apartments In its prime the Gimbels chain had 36 stores in metropolitan New York Philadelphia Pittsburgh and Milwaukee But the other stores ei ther have been bought out by other retailers or sold for redevelopment Other Manhattan stores also are troubled will close its 34th Street branch in ebruary and will vacate its prime location next door to Blooming sometime next year Analysts have blamed the clos ings on the failure to adapt to changing markets competition from specialty stores and discount ers and soaring real estate values that make
