Poge 2 Entertainment Guide The Buffalo NewsSunday April 10 1994 gn otng Ratings are based on a 5 star sys tem: excellent very good good fair poor The Motion Picture Association of America ratings are: hot dogging on the court then falls in with drug dealing gangsters for the prestigious city wide tournament Tupac Shakur the best selling rap mu sician gives the most interest ing performance here playing the scar faced drug czar Birdie The plot is a predictable slide toward the big Thomas 02: MIGHTY DUCKS icVz (PG) Mild language hockey may hem Disney Ducks pack up their gym bags and a few new players poured fresh from Ameri melting pot and head for An aheim Calif to compete in the Junior Goodwill Games But this time they forget to bring along the charm that made them adorable underdogs in the original Real junior hockey players might enjoy the fast paced skating and rollerblading scenes but when it comes to a story this Miller OUR WEDDINGS AND A UNERAL (R) Some nudity and rough lan 5 guage wry and very witty and ultra British comedy with bitters about two lovers whose lives keep intersecting but never permanently A big dumb happy ending comes along and slobbers over the movie like a St Bernard at dinner And Hugh Grant is perhaps a bit more twitty than necessary But until that ending a very funny and Theater Ki HOUSE THE SPIRITS HAIR THE HUDSUCKER PROXY SIRENS JIMMY HOLLYWOOD THE PAPER THE SISTUHS MAJOR LEAGUE II (PG 13) Some violence and rough language smart and entertain ing movie not an important one enjoyable then not good Ron view of the daily life of a New York Hake Thursdays to Saturdays at 8 Sun days at 3 through April 24 Pfeifer Theatre 681 Main St (839 8540) See review in next Sunday's En tertainment Guide (R) Lots of nudity and sexuality the point of the film film debut is a long annoying tease but not in the way you think the ideas that are used to tease you here while the movie just wants to show you beautiful bodies undressed It can be pleasant and distracting to watch but it ends up to be cutesy of all Simon By Saundra Sharp directed by Mary Craig ridays and Saturdays at 8 Sundays at 6 through May 1 Paul Robeson Theatre African American Krzysztof Kieslowski follows the trials of gaining even a modicum of personal freedom while life continues meting out its usual hard blows Juliette Binoche as Julie a bereaved heroine near ly saves this existential rehash With her somnambulistic stares and her ability to make silence a palpable experience she gives a badly overwrought film some moments of real Huntington (R) Rough language mediocre movie that should have been a good one It should have been a cause for rejoicing to see Barty Levinson working in the funky mode of and and telling the story of a blowhard would be Hollywood actor who doubles as a videotaped vigilante It an entertaining movie but Joe Pesci as Jimmy may be the worst bit of casting that master caster Levinson has ever Simon Juliette Binoche in BLUE (R) Violence nudity rough lan guage like chocolate for wa ter In case anyone should drive up in a horse cart and ask you bad could a movie possibly be that stars Jeremy Irons Meryl Streep Glenn Cose Winona Ry der Armin Mueller Stahl and Va nessa always have this movie for an answer artsy polyglot baloney No house this divided against itself could possibly Simon (PG) Some rough language is more intelligence and in ventiveness in any random five minutes of a film by Joel and Ethan Coen than you can find in an entire worth of movies from some studios I can think of The first hour of their big budget big cast takeoff on the movies of rank Capra is as teeming and wonderfully sardonic as Tim Robbins plays a numb skull from the mail room elevated to CEO by Paul Newman just to keep the price of stock down Then he invents the Hula Hoop and the price goes through the roof Unifortunately the second hour follows formula too closely and too listlessly to Simon (PG) sequel to the ragtag team makes good 1989 movie Most of the original motley crew returns including Corbin Bemsen as the pathetic third baseman and Charlie Sheen aspitcher Vaughn The newcomers provide more comedy such as it is: Omar Epps who succeeds Wes ley Snipes as hot dogging Willie Mays Hayes Eric Bruskotter as a country boy catcher named Rube and Takaaki Ishibashi as a Samurai warrior outfielder But HOLY MATRIMONY NO STARS (PG 13) Some rough language Literally I made it through 55 minutes of this only because A) I was trying to imagine what Disney executives thought when they saw the finished prod uct and B) I was trying to figure out whom the movie wanted to humiliate most sexually alluring women or stern religious sects No side thoughts could keep me watching Patricia Arquette as a gold digging slut who marries a young boy in a colony because of a strict bible reading only because she wants the money With luck Disney studios reached absolute bottom with this Jeff Simon MEDE1A By Loma Hill and Michele Ni nacs a Ujima Theatre Company production Thursdays to Saturdays at 8 Sundays at 6 through April 24 Theaterloft 545 Elmwood Ave (883 0380) interesting new version in which the authors have seized the
