Space and Science Center this Thursday a benefit for the Lincoln Child Center Participants such as Restaurant Verbena Compadres Bar Grill and the Lark Creek Cafe will be on hand and wineries and breweries contributing to the event include Ken dall Jackson Ravenswood Winery the Pyramid Brewing Company and a host of others Last event raised $73000 for emotionally troubled children and their families organizers say Bidders looking over the Silent Auction items may choose from NL autographed football helmets ski lift tickets a set of autographed bongo drums belonging to famed entertainer Sheila and a week at a 4 star resort near Walt Disney World According to Library History Room files origins can be traced back to the early 1880s when founder Rebecca McWade the wife of a Southern Pacific Railroad executive began a modest sewing circle among her friends to aid and or who literally turned up on door 4 steps with no one to care for them Support grew to the extent that funds were raised to start a home in West Oakland to house the children Among the early supporters was Mary Crocker (wife of Charles Crocker of the railroad our" fame) and Grace Trevor who helped establish the city's first municipal play ground After several decades in their West Oakland headquarters on Ninth and Campbell streets the children were moved to the spaces and fresh air" of the Oakmore hills children ages 6 through 14 many of who are depen dents of the court and who require 24 hour monitoring and therapeutic treat ment In addition between 35 and 50 additional elementary and middle school students living at home but not able to function in a public school set ting receive instruction and therapy in small classes offered at Lincoln's on site accredited school Lincoln also of fers support services to 200 families in volved with Alameda County's foster care systerii Currently there are nearly 1 8000 children in Alameda County who are being raised by family mem bers other than
