years Thompson traces his interest in Oakland as an unique place where artistic ex pressions thrive backjo the early 1970s when as a 12 year old in Trenton NJ he heaid the Pointer Sisters for the first time They often sang of Oakland and so I drought I want to go there I want to know the place these amazing women grew up" As a young man Thompson traveled quite a bit throughout tlie US on Greyhound buses before finally settling in the Bay Area He is an accom plished violinist playwright and poet and he currently works in book sales Co author Deterville has lived in Oakland since 1979 and is a graduate of the Cali fornia College of the Arts where he is currently pursuing graduate studies Deterville is co founder of Sankofa Cul tural Institute where he has organized and presented sym posiums on Jazz held writh scholars musicians and 'writers' In a joint interview issued by Arcadia in advance of the release Thompson and Deterville described their re search methods to assemble this sampling of Oakland based artists musicians au thors and dancers "rom a very long list of au thor and artist connections Duane and I put together an artistic map based on various Ibcations in Oakland visiting their kitchens and basements and their living rooms with spread out photo albums and scrapbooks We listened as each person uploaded their take on this amazing town as an artist and neighbor spent hours in mu seums researching the ar chives based on categories' that were created before us peeling away many of the ini tial layers to at last discover who our subjects were before and after finding their creative As tliey progressed with their research the authors also put out the call to various community outlets seeking sources with insights into tlie folk creating art in Oakland and tlie East Bay dating back to 19tli century roots The duo sought to focus on the elder rx i Artists of a chronicle without end hope Artists In Oakland' will serve as a starting point for more in depth primary and secondary' research on the topic of tlie black experience in Oakland" said Deterville documents the con tinuum of black artistic achievement here and in so doing we hope it
