colorful blooms will be on display at the historic cemetery on Piedmont Avenue which Is open during daylight hours or three days starting March 28 displays created by local florists and garden club members will be on exhibit In the tower chapel near the cem etery entrance Local historian and author Dennis Evanosky will also be on hand to sign copies of his new book "Mountain View Evanosky is one of a dozen or so volunteer do cents who regularly lead guided tours of Mountain View The new book which hit local bookstores in ebruary is a lively combination of guidebook local history and architectural handbook with a wealth of historic and contem porary Images presents a range of Bay Area characters and their stories while revealing the cemetery as a gateway to his tory landscape culture and writes Naomi Schiff of the Oakland Heritage Alliance The cemetery designed in 1863 by redrick Law Annalee ALLEN A JmKiJ Olmsted who also designed New Central Park is home to such renowned 19th and 20th century men and women as Charles Crocker' one of the founders of the Cen tral Pacific Railroad and ar chitect Julia Morgan designer of Hearst Castle according to Evanosky's Web site His book also details other cemetery stories are grateful to Dennis for all of his archival research especially for unlocking the story behind our Civil War said Mountain View General Manager Jeff Lin deman When Evanosky started vol unteering a decade ago as a guide the Civil War plot was in disrepair and the stories of those buried there had been lost in time He soon realized that underground named Obediah Sum mers who died in 1896 had not been given his due He should have been laid to rest with other soldiers who had served but Instead was in an other plot near the edge of the cemetery that had become overgrown and uncared for Records came to light showing that after his military service Summers moved west became a minister and later served as the California State Legislature's first African American chaplain Evanosky tracked down living descendants and persevered through the red tape to have the former slave Civil War vet eranminister reinterred in the proper area More stories abound in guidebook in cluding that of Annie Hundley born in Kentucky in 1853 who at 8 years old followed her father when he joined the Union Army The little girl their stories while revealing came to light many years later when she published her story By then she had come to Oakland' marrled and was running a home for destitute children on Ruby Street near Mosswood Park used the proceeds
