in Preservation Awards OHA board president Valerie Garry says handing out these awards we hope to inspire individuals in our community to take action to preserve protect and pro mote historic This marks the 15 th year that OHA has con ducted the Part ners award search she added Nomi nation categories include Adaptive UseRehabilita tion the conver sion of a historic structure for a new use while retaining its architectural in tegrity new construction a sensitive new design project built within a historic con text and Restoration removing incompat ible alterations and reconstructing missing ii il Ml lil OAKLAND and all its historic buildings are seen from high up in this file photo Nominations for recent successful preservation projects are due April 21 element to reflect a original ap pearance There are also categories of Ad vocacy Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Individuals organizations projects and programs are all eligible for nomination Garry said as long as the projects have been completed within the last five years and are within Oakland In the individual category self nomi nations can be submitted Garry said and the alliance is also accepting nominations without the nominee's knowledge So now is your opportunity to honor that special someone who cares about Oak land and deserves to be recognized A jury of preservation experts from throughout the Bay Area will review the nominations "All entries must be postmarked by April Garry said The winners will be honored during an awards event on May 8 at Chapel of the Chimes 4499 Piedmont Ave and will be featured on the OHA Web site www oak landheritage org According to the site there were 11 win ners in 2007 The restoration of Hanifin Hall in the 1900 block of San Pablo Avenue was among the nominees receiving recogni tion The Italianate style commercial struc ture was built in 1878 historical files reveal and in recent years had suffered from blight and neglect After a recent $22 million renovation by new owner Mo Mash hoon the building reopened with ground floor retail spaces and upper floor lofts Mashhoon also took advantage of a city of Oakland facade improvement grant The original builder Jeremiah Hanifin born in Ireland in 1834 was an early devel oper of property in downtown Oakland urthermore the files say in 1886 Hanifin Hall was the location of a festive wedding of local bride Mary Yore to the well known Irish separatist patriot Michael Davitt Da vitt was then traveling around the West raising funds for Irish independence stopped in Oakland and evidently lost his heart To learn more Sister Ethel Mary Tinnemann 91 for 65 years a sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and a professor of history at Holy Names University died March 11 Tinnemann was a legend in League of Women Voters circles single handedly walking precincts in every Oakland neigh borhood and registering residents to vote "Sister Ethel Mary was much beloved because she dedicated her time to sign up as many people as she could" said Bonnie Hamlin former Oakland chapter league president Jean Spees wife of former City Coun cilmember Richard Spees served with Tinnemann on the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board in the late 1970s were both appointed by then mayor Lionel Wilson" Spees said "Sister was plain spoken yet well spoken She really advo cated for saving our landmarks She had such an accurate memory and over time collected many wonderful photographs of early day Oakland which she had made into slides or years she taught a popular Oakland history class at Holy Names She will be greatly rearrested Sara Jane Olson on Saturday five days after she was released and announced they intend to keep her in prison for another year California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Oscar Hi dalgo said officials miscalculated sentence and gave her a year's more time "We're launching an investigation to pre vent this from happening again" Hidalgo said Olson the former Symbionese Liberation Army member known as Kathleen Soliah was convicted of killing Myrna Opsahl In the lobby of a Carmichael bank in 1975 and of trying to bomb police cars in Los Angeles Hildalgo said Olson was detained riday night at Los Angeles International Airport as she was preparing to fly to Minnesota where her family lives Treva Miller a spokeswoman for LAX said Olson was detained between 1 1 pm and midnight without incident She was arrested after authorities exam ined her sentence reassessed her time credits and determined she still had more time to do Olson had been released
