February 4, 2007 OBITUARIES LOCAL THE OAKLAND TRIBUNE METRO 3 Oakland edifices inspired by 1906, 1989 earthquakes AY Alice architect servation famous AREA Carey prefor her post-Loma Prieta earthquake restorations, including San Francisco City Hall and Oakland City Hall will be the featured speaker this week at the Second Thursdays at the Chapel of the Chimes lecture series, sponsored by the Oakland Heritage Alliance. Carey will discuss "Preservation Round the Old Oak Tree: Three approaches to three historic downtown buildings." She will highlight City Hall, the Broadway Building (now the Lionel Wilson Building) and Kahn's Department Store (now the Rotunda Building), three crucial landmarks closed in 1989 due to structural damage caused by the Loma Prieta earthquake. Carey a firm she founded in 1983, specializes in the restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures. The firm has won more than 100 design and preservation awards. Carey's restoration projects also include the Palace of Fine Arts, the Berkeley City Club, Mills Hall at Mills College, and Stanford University's historic quad complex.

All three Oakland landmarks to be discussed Thursday were initially constructed following another significant seismic event that rocked the region: the 1906 San Andreas quake. The great quake spurred a downtown Oakland building boom lasting more than a decade. The granite-clad Oakland City Hall, designed by Palmer Hornbostel, architects, was the first "skyscraper" civic structure in the nation. The building drew praise for its detailed terra cotta ornamentation and ornate clock tower cupola. City Hall's neighbor across the plaza, also featuring a creamy white terra cotta exterior, was built as a bank headquarters, on a wedge-shaped site where San Pablo and Broadway intersected.

Kahn's Department Store, designed by Charles W. Dickey, opened its doors in 1913. making downtown Oakland the East Bay destination for shopping during that era. In those days Kahn's entrances opened onto Broadway and San Pablo; an addition completed a few years later created a street frontage on 16th Street a as well. Just like its cross-Bay competitors the City of Paris and the Emporium Kahn's atrium featured an impressive overhead glass dome.

The Kahn family later sold the store to the Liberty House chain, which kept the doors open for a number of years until BART construction and street closures took their toll. Empty and OAKLAND CITY HALL gleams in a 1948 nighttime photo. Built after the San Andreas earthquake of 1906, it was severely damaged during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. San Francisco restoration specialist architect Alice Carey will speak this week on the restoration of downtown Oakland landmarks. undergoing remodeling when Loma Prieta struck, the old Kahn's store experienced structural damage and needed to be totally refurbished and retrofitted before it could be reoccupied.

After the '89 quake, both the Broadway Building and the old Kahn's store became property of the city. In 1995. planners unveiled the new civic complex rededicated as Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, named for a city council member, who died in 1993. Today the old department store is a mixed-use commercial space, and the former bank headquarters has city offices above ground floor commercial spaces opening onto the plaza.

Alice Carey's talk should prove to be an interesting behind the scenes look at the plaza's amazing transformation. Her talk commences at 7:30 p.m. The Chapel of the Chimes is at 4499 Piedmont and free parking is available across the street. Admission is $8 for OHA members and $10 for nonmembers: The deadline to nominate a project for OHA Partners in Preservation awards is March 15. The awards recognize outstanding efforts by residents, property owners, architects, developers and organizations to enhance and promote Oakland's historic; architectural and cultural heritage.
