Walt Disney's White and the Seven is 50 the first freshest and arguably still the fai rest one of all his features Today looking at its mythic sta tus as a classic with single painted celluloids from the film selling to collectors for $30000 hard to imagine that animating the Grimm fairy tale could ever have been con sidered a gamble in Hollywood But it was Disney had in essence bet the studio Mickey Mouse built that au diences would sit through a feature length cartoon The movie industry jeered His brother and partner Roy predicting bankruptcy begged him to stick with Mickey Mouse shorts His wife told him to sleep on the couch That the film was ever made at all is a tribute to stubbornness as well as his creativi ty in 1934 Disney presented the Cher Susan Sarandon Michelle Pfeiffer It shattered all previous box office records when it first opened and went on to become one of the most popular films of all time Now upon its golden anniversary it returns to enchant movie goers around the world once again It created an entirely new art form and set the standard for quality filmed entertainment weeks played at Ra dio City Music Hall the seats were soaked through and had to be re placed The finished film was distilled from literally millions of sketches and drawings orty odd possible dwarfs with names like Shifty and Hoppy Jumpy were weeded through to get to the famous seven Promis ing footage that was judged extra neous to the flow of the story was ruthlessly edited out A wonderful raucous scene of the dwarfs slurp ing up soup was cut at the last minute Disney was determined to pare the film down to the simplest possible form containing the most extravagant imagery WHEN IN LORIDA VISIT IIIWWr To Disney was a great experiment in animation not a crowning achievement The studio had to invent the techniques and equipment needed to achieve the ef fects he had in mind White and the Seven opens today in its sixth' national release Among the hordes of children who crowd to the the aters there will doubtless be just as many adults Those without children to give them an alibi will probably be mut tering something about only being there out of an aesthetic love of animation a good reason to go even if it's rarely the true rea son GENERAL AUDIENCES All Ages Admitted IRST TIME IN nniOOLBY STEREOg Distributed by BUENA VISTA PICTURES DISTRIBUTION SELECTE THLATRES (T I937 The Walt Disney Company Heigh Ho!
