SUNDAY May 28 2006 THE OAKLAND TRIBUNE METRO 3 ormer Oaklander remembered for historic efforts 1 AS a change of pace I would like to re flect on the passing of a former Oak lander who helped launch a movement to celebrate and appreciate heritage and historic landmarks a little over a quarter century ago Elizabeth Lover de) better known as Beth Bagwell author of The Stofy of a passed away at her home in London on May 13 after a long illness The news when it came had long been ex pected But it did give some of us pause as final preparations were commencing for the OHA at 25 event that was about to be held in the elegant ballroom at the landmark Lake Merritt Ifotel Even though Ms Bagwell as we knew her during her Oakland days (later she would go back to Loverde her maiden name) had not actually been on hand in recent years to see how OHA Oakland Heritage Alliance the group she helped found in 1981 had grown to more than 1000 members and continued to offer tours and educational programs she did keep in contact with key individuals within the organization She knew too that her book has continued to sell well as it went into multiple printings and that local bookstore sellers complained that they couldn't keep copies in stock Last fall even as her health was declining Bagwell put thoughts to paper and wrote of her early involvement in OHA as the first presi dent I think I can claim without boasting she wrote I was the instigator behind founding At that time I was serving as a member of the steering group that was setting up the original Oakland Cultural Heritage Survey The federal government had provided a grant for one year for this purpose This steering committee was an ad hoc group that would disband once the project was under way seemed to me that it would be a pity to lose the expertise interest and momentum of this group especially if no further federal funds were forthcoming for future LAN DMARKS Annalee ALLEN The book is well illustrated with fascinating photographs from the Oakland library history room It is a book I have referred to and reread countless times and every time I do I find out something new I had not noticed before Bagwell would go on to write sounded out several other members of this committee they were all enthusiastic and several had been thinking along the same lines We agreed to meet one evening in living room to talk it through I think there were six or seven of us That night we decided to create a non profit organization to continue the work We each chipped in $10 as the first year's dues main concern was to cover a broad range of alms (information advocacy etc) and to offer an umbrella that could' shelter different interests history architecture preservatign cultural diversity the natural environment and so on We recognized that a newsletter would be one vital information and recruitment tool so we started publishing immediately distrib uting copies to everyone we could think of It grew from there" 7 i fii in While 1 cannot say that I was one of those in dividuals who met in that living room that par ticular evening I must have been given one of those newsletters early on because I signed up to become a member right away I was a new comer to Oakland then and was looking for ways to become involved in the community I already was volunteering at the Camron Stan ford House that beautiful Victorian by the lake and wanted to work with folks interested heard of) My interest in Oakland history grew and when book tame out I sat down to read it cover to cover The book's chapters do tell story in compelling sometimes humorous always insightful ways Bagwell lays it all out from the descriptions of the land oak woods on lush and the first inhabitants (the Oh lone indigenous people) to the Spanish Peralta land grant family the Gold Rush and the coming of the Americans She traces the coming of the railroad the 1906 earthquake the development 6f the wa terfront and coming of age as an in dustrial and supply center during the war years The book is well illustrated with fasci nating photographs from the Oakland library history room It is a book I have referred to and reread countless times and every time 1 do I find out something new I had not noticed before Bag book definitely fueled my own interest in writing about Oakland and I soon found my self researching articles for the OHA News the quarterly newsletter that she helped launch The years have flown by there have been preservation battles with wins as well as stinging defeats yet it seems like there al ways is something interesting to write about some new potential landmark to research and document It really is amazing to think that it all started with a neighborhood meeting in some living room According to Naomi Schiff current president a new edition of book should be available by the end of this year folks would like to receive word about in saving and caring for other historic build ings and districts in Oakland With OHA I soon was working with individ uals from various parts of the city who lived in neighborhoods east west and north of the lake (including some places that I had never when the book will be available we ask them to mail us at infoth says Schiff or leave a message at the office 763 9218 Plans for a memorial service for Beth Bag well are pending Community Calendar MONDAY I May 29
