Page 8 The Buffalo NewsTuesday May 2 1989 TELEVISION Tuesday Prime Time TV By Alan Pergament Tuesday Late Night TV Wednesday Morning TV Wednesday Afternoon TV On The Air Jamie Kellner says ox wasn't pleased with Ch 29 to have a commitment equal to those in other cities where we are starting to break through" HE WAR of the Indepen dents in Buffalo will heat up next fall Channel 29 and the ox Broadcasting Net work lineup are getting a di vorce on Aug 3 1 Channel 49 is the third party marrying ox the following day "Married With Chil 1 Jump and Most will be moving to the Buffalo Sa bres station on Sept I The relationship between ox and WUTV apparently makes the one between Al and Peg Bundy of "Married With seem ideal Channel 29 says it is divorc ing ox ox says it is divorc ing Channel 29 because its weekend shows do significantly better nationally than they do locally in the ratings ox scored a 49 percent national ratings increase last season In a press release Channel 29 Vice President and General Manager rank Gregg said it is no longer viable for the station to carry ox programming be cause the network is its lineup to air on CHCH TV in Hamilton Ont which plans to simulcast its en tire schedule with Channel 29 next fall He declined to say what replacement program ming is planned tower is within 35 miles of said Gregg would be like two sta tions in the same market carry ing the same programs This problem is compounded by the fact that CHCH is carried on many of the US cable sys tems" Jamie Kellner president of ox Broadcasting said in a telephone interview that ox own the foreign rights to the programs it carries The production companies that make the series sell them to Canada the same as the pro ducers of the shows for the Big Three networks He added that CHCH expected to carry all of programs next sea son statement about American cable companies ig nores the fact CHCH isn't car ried by either TCI of Buffalo or Adelphia International the two larger cable systems And although CHCH is close to Buffalo many Buffalo view ers still need an outside anten na to receive it clearly fragmentation is dead said Gregg afford the relationship It is econom Gregg said he has been un able to get the Jamestown cable system to carry WUTV al though it carries CHCH about 25000 said Gregg simulcasts really are more harmful to Channel 29 in Canada where it sells a significant amount of its adver tising Canadian cable compa nies need to carry Channel 29 on weekend nights when CHCH is carrying the same programming Gregg also said Channel 29 Kellner said ox looked to make a change because "we are dramatically under delivering in Buffalo Nationally we're first second or third in the age 18 to 49 audience In Buffalo we're a distant fourth At this point it seems appropriate to make a change We pleased with them They pleased with us" ox begins airing a series of monthly Monday night movies starting May 1 5 and is expected 4 to program Monday nights this fall But industry observers ex pect it should take years to pro gram seven days a week Why would Channel 49 so readily pick up the ox pro gramming that Channel 29 is discarding?
