gains are the result of earlier cost cutting moves rather than big increases in sales With slightly more than half of major US companies reporting their results profits are up about 20 percent over the 1992 period according to figures released Mon day by IBES Inc a financial infor mation firm that tracks earnings estimates But data garnered from 2220 companies or about 55 percent of the firms IBES follows regularly showed revenue advanced only about 4 percent during the period real story of the profits surge is improving said Michael Metz a vice presi dent with Oppenheimer Co sales and volume have not shown a very strong he said and that could spell trouble in the coming year as companies run out of excesses to wring out of their operations The meager growth in revenue reflects the
