SUNDAY September 26 2004 Genealogists feature family month October is amily History Month at the California Ge nealogical Society in the landmark Latham Building 1611 Telegraph Ave In downtown Oakland are planning a series of events and the public Is in vited to visit our library with user fees to nonmembers waived during says society president Jane Lindsey are offering beginning genealogy classes on 5 consec utive Saturdays starting at 10 am and free lectures open to members and non meipbers on topics including use of Internet sites research techniques and photo preser vatlon The lectures will be held Thursday through Sat urday throughout October starting at 1 pm" A printable calendar of events Is available at wwwCal gensoccom The society organized in 1898 Is the oldest genealogy society In California and was formed to help people trace and compile their own family histories years ago we moved over from across the Bay to Oakland here we are close to BART and public transportation a great con Annalee ALLEN venience for our members" says Lindsey to the society is not required to visit our library but we do usually charge a $5 fee to non members" Society volunteers are avail able to do research upon re quest for an hourly fee The historic Latham Building is a major contrib utor to the National Register listed Built in 1925 It is a 14 story with two wings atop a one story with mezza nine base Textured brdwn face brick clads the shaft por tion of the building and a con trasting two story ornamented terra cotta capital draws the LANDMARKS 1 THE NOW VANISHED Latham Man sion (left) stood on 1 7th and Jackson streets over looking Lake Merritt Theater as well as Several other Oakland buildings He also built Bay Area race tracks including Golden Gate ields and Bay Meadows According to Cultural Heri tage Survey flies much was made of the building when It first opened because It was the first to have a two level base ment garage for tenant parking and was therefore a most modern structure in a convenient downtown location The building was named for a pioneer California family the Lathams who at one time lived in a gracious mansion surrounded by gardens near Lake Merritt A brother Milton served as governor of Cali fornia in the 1850s Recently the Latham Building underwent a lobby makeover and the now gallery like space features changing art exhibits curated by the Oakland Museum of Califor eye upward to the handsomely detailed building cornice Prominent architect and de veloper Maury I Diggs (1886 1953) was responsible for the design He is best known for his work on the ox Oakland amous early tenants Included Henry Kaiser during the early years of his soon to be world wide conglomerate and the Alameda Contra Costa Transit Authority now known as AG Transit special galleries depart ment Currently on view are paintings by urban landscape artist Anthony Holdsworth notable for his large scale works of various Oakland landmarks such as the Para hospice dedicates sanctuary endowment will fund family area at medical facility By Tasha Bartholomew STA WRITER Dorothy arid Chuck Gravelie know what like to lose a child In fact the couple lost two sons to heart related diseases Stephan at age 17 and Douglas at 50 When Stephan was 111 many years ago Dorothy Gravelie said she and her husband spent countless hours at the hospital and would often find solace in the medical fa chapel it will be our gift to them as well as to Stephan and Douglas" Dorothy Gravelie said Thursday mornlng marked the official dedication of the Stephan Douglas Sanc tuary on the grounds of George Mark nestled behind airmont Hospital In unin corporated San Leandro The hospice was founded by Kathy Nicholson Hull a clinical psychologist and named after her brothers George and Mark who died at young ages George at 30 from cancer and Mark at 16 from an automobile accident 1 The Gravelies are In laws of John Nich The sanctuary and meditation center will be used as a place for families of all denom inations to pray and reflect Jack Elliott spiritual care coordinator for the house said the sanctuary serves as an Integral part of George services created the sanctuary as a safe place where families can gather for prayer medi tation memorials or just take a quiet break from the day" he said George Mark which opened in March is the first free standing pediatric facility In the United States that provides respite care transitional and end of llfe care for children Community Calendar KDOL SUNDAY I September 26 101 8th St Oakland 464 7773 KTOP TV MONDAY I September 27 IRST MO REE GET MORE ROOM WITHOUT REMODELING!
