SUNDAY March 19 2006 THE OAKLAND TRIBUNE METRO 3 Author relates history of bungalows THE term bungalow' tends to trigger thoughts of quaint cozy cottages But historic house lovers are real izing bungalow houses can ac tually be much grander in size than one might think Author and architectural historian Paul Duchscherer makes the case that bunga lows do not come only in small sizes He showcases larger scale Arts and Crafts homes in his latest book "Be yond the Bungalow Grand Homes in the Arts and Crafts published by Gibbs Smith The author a longtime San rancisco resident will be lec turing and showing slides af 7:00 this evening at irst Pres byterian Church 2001 Santa Clara Ave Alameda The event is sponsored by the Ala meda Architectural Preserva tion Society boors open at 6:30 pm The suggested dona tion is S5 Copies of Duchs cherer's book will be for sale after the talk event organizers say previous book titles include the Bungalow" and "Outside the Bungalow" which highlights the surrounding col orful gardens and yard areas Annalee ALLEN 1 His collaborator for his latest title is photographer Linda Svendson I The duo traveled across the country finding residential ex amples from Swiss Chalet to Mission and Spanish Colonial Revival Tudor and the so called American oursquare I in great abundance I nearly everywhere" with a square floor plan wide front porch hipped roof and (usually) attic dormer win dows irst seen widely in the 1890s during the heyday of so called streetcar suburbs these ubiquitous homes were nick named the Box" Seat "Classic Box" and the Cube" in Kansas and Iowa According to the author starting in the 1970s when in terest in house restoration began to rise in popularity the old fashioned "square" seemed to meet the needs of many people "looking for a roomy older home with char acter and personality yet adaptable to the ways of modern living" With their plain upright shape and simple roof configu rations he states foursquares tended to be less expensive to fix than Victorian era homes Many of the homes tended to be found in older urban neighborhoods awaiting revi talization and therefore rela tively affordable another plus says Duchscherer eatured on the LANDMARKS WnMnl bWBbw AUTHOR PAUL DUCHSCHERER will talk about his new book the Bungalow: Grand Homes in the Arts and Crafts at 7:00 tonight cover is an Oakland home known as the Chick House designed by Bernard Maybeck and considered to be says the author one of his most mas terful domestic projects Built in 1913 the Chick House is nestled in a rustic canyon studded with mature oaks ortunately the devastating 1991 East Bay hills fire (which destroyed many structures nearby) spared the Swiss Cha let like Chick House Born in 1862 in New York Greenwich Village to German American parents (his father was a cabinet maker by trade) Bernard Ralph Maybeck was called Ben by his family and close friends? he described as a prowler in the back yard of his home on the 1000 block of Putnam Street in Antioch early Saturday morning police said Jason Goettsch 35 and his girlfriend woke up at about 2:30 am Saturday when they were startled by Mario Rivera 24 of Antioch who was in the yard be hind Goettsch home said Antioch Po lice Det Mike ranzen ranzen said Rivera had to climb a fence to gain entrance into the yard Goettsch later told officers that he went into his back yard with a handgun yelling that he was armed and had called the police Goettsch said he did not immediately find Rivera but as he walked around the corner of his home Rivera appeared and swung at him with a baseball bat Goettsch then shot Rivera twice in the body he told investigators Goettsch called the police at 2:47 a and Rivera was flown by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek where he was pronounced dead ranzen said the department will submit a copy of a report to the Contra Costa County District
