MONDAY April 4 2005 THE OAKLAND TRIBUNE LOCAL 3 TRIBUNE ILE PHOTOS MAYOR RANK MOTT (above) meets with lady petitioners about hiring female police officers In 191 1 Mayor Mott got married prompting a new nickname for City Hall (below) then under construction wedding J8 Jr lallH KW "Pi pJ I lav IsHhIW xjESSMflofJyB nuptials not an Oakland first WEDDING bells will soon be ringing at City Hall say news reports Mayor Jerry Brown will be tying the knot with long time companion Anne Gust on a day and time not yet announced According to the his tory files this will not be the first time a confirmed bachelor mayor of Oakland has decided to take the big step One hundred years ago in 1905 rank Mott a self made man hardware store owner and former telephone operator (the city's first) was elected mayor ushering in a decade of unparalleled city expansion and civic improvements At the top of the list of his accomplish ments say the files was spearheading the drive to build a magnificent new city hall which opened great fanfare in 1914 On Jan 10 1911 midway through construction of the 343 foot high cream colored granite and terra cotta trimmed the 45 year old Mott mar ried Gertrude Meyer of San rancisco a widow with a young son It was his first marriage Newspapers called the new structure wedding cake" and the nickname stuck says Oakland historian and author Beth Bagwell In her book "Oakland the Story of a City" Bagwell recounts how Mott first en tered local politics in 1894 when Mayor George Pardee appointed him to the City Council to fill a vacancy Born in San rancisco in 1866 Mott had moved to Oakland with his mother and father when he was 2 years old The oldest of six children he was forced to leave school at age 1 1 and help support the family following the sudden death of his father The youngster clerked in a hard ware store on Broadway (today Smart and inal Store occupies the site) and worked as a Western Union telegram messenger where he earned $1650 a month working 12 hour days As telephones began to make their ap pearance in nearby homes Mott became first telephone operator His job included going out and repairing the lines when the wind blew them down One wire was strung across Lake Merritt XT a I ij I Krlllll 1 ft ft ft so the story goes and in one instance after a storm he was forced to row out find the severed line and reattach it Mott eventually was able to save up enough to buy the hardware business where he had worked as a sales clerk After serving three years as ap pointee on the council Mott was per suaded to run for mayor receiving endorsements from both the local Demo crats and Republicans Upon taking office Mott is quoted as saying going to do a lot of things that should be done" He made good on one of his campaign promises by suc cessfully raising funds (through passage of municipal bonds) to not only build the new city hall but also a municipal audi torium and theater by the lake Addi tional funds were used to dredge Lake Merritt and construct a boulevard com pletely around the edge During his 10 years as mayor Mott brought about more noticeable changes with the $8 million in bond issues passed by voters: establishing a city mu seum and creating many of the parks we enjoy today (Lakeside Park Deremery and Mosswood parks among others) I le inaugurated the civil service Li Annalee ALLEN LANDMARKS system and reorganized the police and fire departments says Bagwell building new stations and acquiring new equip ment The police force grew from 65 men to 208 Although progressive in many matters Mott apparently could not en dorse hiring women to the police force (as a delegation of civic ladies learned when they petitioned him in his office pictured here) New bride Gertrude achieved promi nence in her own right serving as presi dent of the leading organi zation the Ebell Society and establishing the California Writers Club sponsor of the Woodminster Amphitheatre and Cas cades in Joaquin Miller Park In 1938 after 27 years of marriage Gertrude passed away Her husband lived until age 92 dying on Dec 16 1958 The editorial obituary hailed Mayor Mott as Builder of Modern Oak singling out his tireless efforts during his second year in office helping the thousands of San rancisco refugees who fled the earthquake and fires of April 18 1906 Now a century later perhaps the time has come to have a new nickname for city hall how does Mayor wedding cake sound?
