Oakland at home at 1793 12th Street near the Pacific Coast Cannery where Ray's father worked Ray's grandfather was one of the builders of the Transcontinental Railroad After the death of his mother in 1920 Ray was sent to Watsonville to live with relatives but returned to Oakland to graduate from Mcclymonds High School Ray attended UC Berkeley supporting himself by working as a "house boy" graduated in 1940 with a degree in Art and worked at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island In 1942 Ray enlisted in the US Army In the Army Air Corps Ray initially trained to be a rear gunner in bomber Ray was transferred to the infantry serving in the 317th Regiment 80th Infantry Division part of General Patton's Third Army Ray saw action in Europe and took part in the Rhine River crossing Ray attained the rank of Sergeant and among other decorations received the Combat Infantryman Badge Ray was one of approximately 13500 Chinese Americans to serve in the US Military dunng WWII After the war Ray returned to Berkeley and used his artistic talents as a professional pi iographer He recalled travelling to the town of Locke on numerous occasions to photogmoh Chinese American wedding celebrations He also continued his education by attending the 'California College of Arts and Craft Ray ultimately made his career at the Alameda Naval Air Station where he was responsible for numerous aircraft related painting projects Besides his vife and daughter' Ray is survived by his youngest brother Henry of San rancisco numerous nephews nieces great nephews and great MANLEY Died May 31 2006 Edith Manley a long time resident of San Leandro quietly slipped away Wednesday May 31 2006 She was told she had lung cancer only two weeks before she died Edith was bom the youngest child of Daniel and Katherine Walsh and raised in St Louis Mo She attended schools in the area and graduated from St Louis University In 1951 she married Glenn Manley Edith and Glenn had four daughters Moira Deirdre Mary rances and Megan The family moved to California in 1963 Edith graduated from California State University Hayward with a Masters degree in Public Administration in 1979 Edith worked many years for Alameda County and retired in 1983 to pursue other interests She was involved in several different volunteer organizations including Project Eden in Hayward She joined Toastmasters International and discovered that she loved public speaking and she loved ihe people she meWhrough this organization Edith continued presenting speeches to various until ill health forced her to slow down a bit During her life Edith was a collector of great friends from so many varied backgrounds and interests She will be sorely missed by all who crossed paths with her Edith was preceded in death by her parents her daughters Mary rances (1959) and Megan Nelson (2001) and her husband Glenn (1988) She is survived by her brother Robert Walsh of Rochester NY her daughters Moira the past 50 years His work appeared in many books and magazines including Car craft Rod and Custom Custom Rodder and Hot Rod Custom Chronicle His own 1951 Chevy was the first car ever painted 'candy appte" red Jerry had been a proud member of the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of ame since 1962 In the late 1960's Jerry changed careers and became a beautician He owned several hair salons and a dress shop in the Broadway and Lake Merritt neighborhoods of Oakland As a hairstylist he participated in platform competition where his creativity earned him national recognition Jeny returned to the custom car business in 1984 His later creations have won countless trophies including six consecutive "Most Outstanding Custom Interior' awards at ttie Grand National Roadster Show His most recent business Custom Car Concepts was located in Concord California Horses were his lifelong love Jerry owned and trained several thoroughbreds racing them at Golden Gate Reid and Bay Meadows He was also a learning challenges One of her greatest joys was teaching children to read Ethel enjoyed painting with oils on canvas chalk pastels needle point and embroidery She performed with the Mother Singers choral group and with the St Lawrence OToole choir By far her favorite pastime was reading and collecting books She was a 25 year member of a local reading group which she attended monthly In addition she loved animals and cared for a vast array of creatures (wild and tame) that found their way to her home Ethel was an optimistic person with a delightful sense of humor throughout the many health challenges she faced Her courage and strengtti have been and continue to be an inspiration to many She will be greatly missed by her family many friends and students whose lives she touched A memorial
