15 -Foot Tropical Tree Thrives In Local Yard Mrs. D. E. Pickens of 124 Watt street has a 15-foot Mimosa tree in her back yard, believed to be the only one in Circleville. Mimosa trees are native to warm tropical climates although they grow as far north as Virginia and North Carolina.

Mrs. Pickens says her Mimosa tree, which has exotic fringy blossoms of pink and white, bloomed since June and still had a few lingering blossoms. Mrs. Pickens said the tree was brought to Circleville by Dr. F.

C. Schaeffer from the mountains of North Carolina. It was planted in a container and taken to the basement for the first two years of its life here. When it was eventually planted out in the Pickens yard it withstood the Winters and has continued to thrive for about ten years. It is planted in a sheltered location where it is shielded from the wind.

Mimosa trees have bipinnate leaves which close at night, according to Mrs. Pickens. She says that Dr. and Mrs. Schaeffer have a similar tree planted in the yard of their Columbus home.
