Even ing News article Sir Harry began earning his fortune in gold mines in 1917 the robust financial assis tance of a group of Buffalo business including three Wettlaufers (Conrad Edward and Louis) Addi son Williams founder of Wil liams Gold Refining Henry Wendt president of Buffalo orge Co William Magavern an attor ney Edward Koons a realtor and Albert Wende an engineer Assante stars as Count Alfred de Marigny a playboy who arrived in the Bahamas to change his rakish image His courtship and subsequent marriage to Sir (Rod Steiger) very young (age 17) and very rich daughter Nancy (Catherine Mary Stewart) ripped apart the family Meanwhile an organized crime family was seeking to legalize gam bling on the British colony against Sir wishes When Sir Harry was found dead in a fire de Marigny became the chief suspect His mother in law (Mariette Hartley) felt he was guilty and his support was tested attracted me to de Marigny is that he is a man who is incredibly honest with said Assante he did have a past that would have corroborated him as a chief suspect He was known in New York as a gigolo He was a very rakish character He did try to do something with his life and unfortu nately fell into the worst circum stances He moved into a society that was quick to point the finger at him because he fell in love with the daughter of the richest man in the Based on three books including de autobiography is most memorable for its nasty portrayal of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor The Duke who governed the Ba hamas after abdicating his throne to marry Wallis Simpson is depicted as a greedy man less interested in truth and justice than in lining his own pockets The Duchess is depicted as a manipulative catty woman looking to achieve the sense of royalty in the Bahamas that the Duke's abdication cost the couple in England After seeing the ugly side of the Duchess in you can un derstand why the Duke eventually renounces his own decision to give up the throne for love think that the portrayal of the Duke and Duchess is unusual per haps controversial and very direct and honest in light of the myth that has been sustained for years in these kind of greeting card said producer Leonard Hill Hill saw gold in this story but has some difficulty mining it The ro mance between Assante and Stewart is cliched hard to believe and according to old news accounts accurately depicted Their eyes meet across a crowded room they talk at the punch bowl argue and quickly fall in love Even more unfathomable than the romance is the depiction of the mob and the native politics of the island conclusion also is a dis appointing cop out On the plus side Steiger does a terrific job playing the powerful pro tective father who is unable to handle his independence and choice of a husband Hartley plays his strong willed wife Eunice who is equally protective of her daughter Kevin McCarthy and Wayne Rog ers in relatively minor roles steal the series McCarthy a wonderful character actor known for playing villains is Harold Christie a real es tate dealer who fails to persuade Sir Harry to allow gambling on the is land Rogers dominates the series upon arrival Tuesday night as Raymond Schindler a type detec tive who solves Sir death believe that this is an honest impression of what happened at the time and involved less time com pression and less composite charac ters than the which did take some wrcckless said Hill who produced both were a number of people on location working as extras who were in the Bahamas in 1943 And it was my sense talking to them that the conclu sion we came to pretty much reflects the consensus of people who were around at the time I think it reflects interesting deduction support ed by 1 want to give away ending But Hill has more confidence in its deductions than I do after reading 1943 Buffalo Evening News accounts of de Marig ny's trial De Marigny was acquitted of murder and a jury recommended his deportation movie conclusions are significantly different than his con clusions in a 1943 article He wrote that de Marigny was innocent but added the condition of the body and the fiery markings of the murder room indicated to me a killer who was driven by a passion never meant to be satisfied with the mere ending of Sir This is another docudrama that critics of the form will hate with a passion I 1 Page 3 I 1.
