The Buffalo NewsThursday May 28 1987 By ALAN PERGAMENT Lucy to Help Ch 49 Sian On July 1 iuu love uicy cunt tastwooa James Amess Andy Griffith and Jack Lord I have good news for you Channel 49 is coming inal on tr '7 iy When it rains it pours A couple of weeks ago WNEQ (Channel 23) went on the air Now comes word that still another long awaited sta tion is going to arrive Representatives of Channel 49 say that the station finally will sign on July 1 with a schedule of movies cartoons and syndicated reruns While WNEQ served to complement its sister public television station WNED (Channel 17) Channel 49 will be fighting Channel 29 for Buffa shrinking advertising revenue WNYB TV the call letters for Channel 49 has taken so long to get on the air that some observ ers questioned whether it would make it The present owners of the station TVX Corp in Virginia have already sold it to a Rochester group which goes by the name of irst Allied Massachusetts Corp and owns four stations in minor markets in Missouri Georgia Indiana and Texas Gene Loving chairman of the board of TVX noted his group had to sell the Buffalo station after recently purchasing five stations from Taft Broadcasting The five Taft stations put TVX over the CC limit of 12 stations so Buffalo had to go Loving said the Rochester group is awaiting CC approval to take over He expects the new owners to take over some time in July and says TVX then will serve as a consultant Channel 49 presently has an office on Hertel Avenue Bill Saltzgiver who ran an independent station in Pittsburgh WPGH TV has been named general manager and is putting together the station's staff Richard Meyers the chief engineer told this column that the station will run four movies a day once it signs on Meyers came to WNYB from station in New Orleans which ran uncut movies will be edited said Meyers "Buffalo is a lot more conservative than New Saltzgiver said Channel 49 owns the rights to old series such as Love Clint Eas old series ive and "The Andy Griffith as well as relative new comers like "Dempsey and ver It also owns the rights to a new Disney movie package The big question for local TV executives is whether Buffalo can support another indepen dent station claims Loving of the stations we have are in cities smaller than have a lot of confidence in this said Saltzgiver I have a true belief in it I be The new station will give local cable opera tors who already are looking for space for Channel 23 an additional headache Saltzgiver says he received any assur ances from local cable officials that the station will be carried by cable systems But he claims if the new CC rules go into effect June 10 as expected systems would have to find a spot for the new station Mary Travers' series on chicken could've been called "A Killer in Your Refrigerator" Say Goodbye to Value Television Channel 7 Program Director Ron Martzolf decided there any value in carrying it Martzolf said the home shopping program will be dropped June 1 and replaced by reruns "It (Value) doing a thing for said Martzolf was very little response to the sale Wondering Why CBLT TV Channel 5 in To ronto carry games three four and five of the Stanley Cup finals?
