baseball ad- Gcorgc Talsma, former Park High Scliool pitcher and outfielder, was a winner his first time out as a professional baseball player. Talsma was signed to a bonus contract by the Minnesota Twins and sent to Wytheville, in the Appalachian Rookie League. His first start on the mound came against Salem, and it took him a couple of innings to get his bearings. Salem got a run in the first inning while Talsma was trying to find the plate. He walked five men in the first two innings.

The Racine hurler got tough from there on, however, and walked no one else while striking out 14 opponents. Wytheville took a 4-3 decision and found themselves a hurler in the process. The Wytheville Times had this to say about Talsma 's debut: I "Talsina walked five in the first two frames, but none thereafter as he just got stronger and stronger. "The Rebels (Salem) racked up seven hits, four for extra bases, off the right-hander 's slants, but in no inning were they able to get as many as two safeties." Who is the leader in all- time national point standings for late model stock cars in the United States Auto Club (USAC)? That's easy. Racine 's Norm Nelson is the all-time champ.

Nelson ranked third last year, second in 1961 and was the champioi: in 1960. Racine auto fans and Nelson fans will next have a chance to see him in action next Sunday in the 200-mile national championship race at State Fair Park. He will be driving a 1963 Plymouth with A. J. Foyt expected to bores Richter, thats all.

the other he has prepared the race. Rebels Win 9-5 Nelson has won eight late of accepting a bonus. Some of the reasons vanced were these: 1. He eould become a regular more quickly in football. 2.

The chances of not making the majors in baseball are too great. 3. Washington offered a better football contract than any baseball team was willing to provide. 4. He figured he would have a longer period in the "big money" category.

5. Shorter season. Now it turns out, however, that none of these was right. Richter provided the answer himself last week. "I get bored standing around so much in baseball," he said.

Simple, isn't it? In football, the action is constant. In baseball, there is little to do while awaiting your turn at bat or during most of the game in the outfield.
