it was per mitted to do so but each time was to firm up its At one point it told the CC it had a binding letter of credit from the Manufacturers Traders Trust Co which it did not Judge Miller said Later the company said it had a loan letter from the irstmark Credit Corp but abandoned the let ter when it learned the signer irstmark Vice President Jeffrey A Rochwarger was leaving the corporation when the exhibits were due to be exchanged and the hear ing date neared Unific filed yet a fifth amendment Judge Miller wrote was too much too often and this belated request was denied Consequently Unific never tried to patch up its irst mark negotiations and at the hear ing offered instead a financial proposal that varied from its appli cation That inappropriate proffer was Mr Peace was the moving force By JOHN SINCLAIR Religion Reporter There was a time when almost every Catholic church in the Buf falo area was an ethnic parish The Irish attended their own churches as did the Germans the Italians the Poles and other immigrants from Europe Nor was ethnicity confined to Catholics Lutherans set up congregations for those mem bers who did not speak German or one of the Scandinavian languages Just at a period when changing times and conditions indicated that ethnicity would be a thing of the past except for occasional celebra tions or liturgies in a language of the Old Country another ethnic group has entered the scene and may last longer as an entity than its predecessors The Rev David Gallivan director of the Spanish Speaking Apostolate of the Diocese of Buf falo said there are differences be tween the Hispanic parishes and the Polish Italian or German eth nic parishes which preceded them or one thing he said the Euro pean immigrants who made up the ethnic parishes of an earlier day seldom returned to their European homelands whereas Western New York Hispanics mostly Puerto Ricans have frequent opportuni ties to return to the island and maintain their cultural ties There also is a different outlook on ethnicity now In the heyday of European immigration the ing concept meant that immi grants became Americanized as quickly as they could The tendency now is to move into the mainstream of American life while still retaining the cultural heritage of the past ather Galli van said ather Gallivan is pastor of St Church on Louisiana Street in addition to being director of the Hispanic apostolate St is one of a half dozen parishes with Hispanic members and programs Holy Cross Immaculate Concep tion St Columba Queen of All Saints in Lackawanna and St Elizabeth Ann Seton in Dunkirk have Hispanic members and are ministered to by the Spanish Speak ing Apostolate ather Gallivan said liturgies are celebrated regularly in Spanish at the parishes and most of them have Hispanic deacons and either Hispanic or Spanish speaking sisters of the parishes have scrip tural studies and popular devotions in Spanish and have large youth he said found that Hispanic youth who never before belonged to youth groups have chosen to participate in our ethnic The Hispanic parishes also join in such things as the good riday Passion Play at Immaculate Con ception which brings people from all over the diocese ather Galli van said He noted that there is a diocesan Hispanic Youth Encounter from 10 am to 5 pm today at College which will be conducted by the Rev Roberto Gonzalez OM a Puerto Rican priest ather Gallivan said that the United States ranks fifth in the number of Spanish speaking people and that Hispanics tend to hold onto their native language after learning English liturgies and cere monies are important to he said keep them in touch with their own Ethnic parishes help newcomers overcome some of the obstacles they encounter in entering a new life can feel more at home in their church and bilingual pro grams can help them fit into the greater ather Gallivan said The big influx of Spanish speak ing peoples to the United States came after World War II Since they came from areas where priests are in short supply the Hispanics could not expect priests from their homeland to come to serve them as did the Poles Germans and Italians While more and more Hispanics are taking part in the church as deacons and other leaders it may be some time yet before the Hispan ic parishes begin providing their Will Be Honored Humboldt Parkway
