Th»* Daily Standard, Sikeslon, Mo. Wednesday, Dneber 15, 1971 16 U.S. Idea Of Balance WASHINGTON (AP) The Nixon administration’s version of a Mideast military balance is an Israel strong enough to defend against an Arab attack into territory she now holds— but not mighty enough to strike deep into Egypt. The United States is committed to preventing the balance of power from swinging against Israel. But just what constitutes a “balance” is usually in some disagreement. The United States has yet to supply the additional Phantom jets Israel wants. According to the U.S. estimate, Israel’s army of some 28f>,000 men is superior to Egypt’s 400,000-man army and .Iordan’s 100,000 man force combined. The navies of the opposing sides are too small to make much difference either way. Air power is rated a key factor. On this, the U.S. analysts say more planes for Egypt would do her little good now because she lacks the pilots to fly them. Only $2.50 at SHY’S M'dtowner Village 471-082b They say Israel has enough planes for defense over the land she now holds, end that a larger Israeli air force might have the power to range through Egypt-and suffer unacceptably high losses. Israeli planes flying into Egypt would face missile defenses emplaced since the 1967 war, and possibly Soviet as well as Egyptian planes. In 1967 the Israelis were able to launch a pre-emptive strike, destroying much of Egypt’s air force on the ground. The U.S. calculation presumes that under a “balance” the Israelis would be able to repel Arab attackers without overly heavy losses to Israel. It figures Egypt’s canalcrossing capability is as yet limited, though Israel would suffer more losses now in repelling an Arab invasion than it did in the brief 1967 fight. The “balance” still would prevail, in the U.S. view, even with Soviet pilots on Egypt’s side, providing they flew only defensive missions. But Soviet offensive strikes or other operations over Israeliheld territory could quickly tip the scale against Israel. Yes. More than half of these tragedies were caused by the unhappy combination of drinking and driving. It is sad but true that come the party season, many persons wno may be prudent all year increase their intake of alcohol to the danger point. Here are some suggestions from Metropolitan Life that may enable you to have a good time and still stay alive. No doubt if you’re driving, Earthquake Measured PALMER, Alaska (AP) — An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale was recorded Tuesday night off the east coast of Siberia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the Palmer Observatory reported. A seismic sea wave watch issued by the observatory for Alaska’s Aleutian Island chain, about 800 miles east of Kamchatka, was later called off. The quake was centered about 1,700 miles west of Anchorage and was not felt in Alaska, the observatory said. Japan’s Meteorlogical Agency also issued a wave warning but lifted it four hours later after determining that no unusually high tides would hit Japan. Seismographie instruments in Washington located the epicenter of the quake on Kamchatka, where a smaller tremor registered 7.3 on the scale Nov. 24. But Japan’s meteorological agency located the focus near the Komandorskie Islands, about 150 miles east of Kamchatka. it’s best not to drink at all. But, if you do, be aware that it takes one full hour for two-thirds of an ounce of alcohol to burn out of your system. One way to have your drink and still be sober when driving -time arrives is to pace yourself. Do not take an alcoholic drink for at least one and a half to two hours before driving. The effect of alcohol varies with each person, but many find it helpful to eat before drinking and eat while drinking. If you are going to a party as a couple, or with other couples, it might be a good idea to decide which person in the group will not drink at all and thus be responsible for the safe driving. If you go to several, you might take turns from party to party. However you decide to handle it, stay sober drive carefully and stay alive to enjoy the next holiday season.
