(AP) One of the leading producers of paper products is raising fish for quality control. When Kimberly-Clark paper and pulp mill began operating here in 1964, a major concern of state and local authorities, company officials and sportsmen was that the valuable salmon and steelhead fishing of the Sacramento river not be damaged. Monitoring instruments and outside laboratory reports proved effluent from the mill was safe. Yet the company wanted further proof that the ll million gallons of water discharged daily into the river was not harmful to the fish. So fish were asked to take the test.

On company property near the river, the company developed a bio assay station consisting of five aquariums, each holding 60 gallons of water. Two dozen fingerling salmon are placed in each aquarium and subjected to concentrations of effluent IO, 20 or 30 times stronger than they would ever experience in the river. Later, the salmon are released into the Sacramento. Not only do the fish suffer no ill effects from this artificially high concentration of paper mill company has just won an award from the California Federation of Clubs for rts effective pollution abatement program.
