Christiansen STANFORD, Calif. (AP) The game against California at Berkeley today is the last for Jack Christiansen as head football coach of the Stanford Cardinals. Athletic Director Joe Ruetz announced Friday that a decision was made time ago" to fire Christiansen who will be paid off for two years that remain on a five-year contract. The timing of the announcement was the result of insistence by Christiansen himself for a clarification of his status in the face of published reports that he would be dismissed. He was the target of considerable criticism last season for starting Mike Cordova instead of Guy Benjamin at quarterback, and during this season for switching back and forth between the two talented quarterbacks.

Christiansen, 47. moved up to head coach at Stanford in 1972 after four years as an assistant to Coach John Ralston. Under Christiansen, the Cardinals compiled a 29-22-3 record and posted four winning seasons. They are 5-5 this fall and need a victory today for a third- place finish in the Pacific-8 Conference. tiope to name a new coach by the end of the year at the latest, and hopefully before Ruetz said.

Christiansen came to Stanford after 17 years as a player and coach in the National Football League. A graduate of Colorado State, he was a defensive back with the Detroit Lions from 1951-58 and played on three world championship teams. He spent nirie years coaching with the San Francisco 49ers, the last five as head coach, and in 1970 was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. enjoyed my nine years here, and I will continue to live in the Christiansen said. at Hulman Center. The Golden Arrows fought off upset-minded Clinton to get a 64-60 decision and the Red Devils romped to an early lead and coasted to a 65-57 triumph over Schulte. In games, West Vigo jiovicn 6-3-4, 2-6-0, and State were scheduled to meet at noon with Sullivan and Brazil playing the other semifinal at 1:30. Clinton and Schulte were to hook up at 3 for 5th place, with the consolation at 7 and the finals at 8:30. New Coach Mike Wildcats stunned the who had the benefit of already having played one jumping into a 20-11 lead after one period.

Dave Davitto and Greg Luce were potent for the Wildcats in that first quarter as they scored six points each from over the top of 2-1-2 zone defense. Luce kept it up, finishing as high man for both teams with a total of 24 points. Davitto, unfortunately for the Clintonians, was blanked for the final three quarters as defense tightened. Veterans Mal Mihajlovich and Tom latter a veteran even though still a the Sullivan scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Bill Townsend and Bill Pirtle chipped in with 12 and IO for the Arrows.

Luce received double-figure support from Bryan Lovellette with 12 and from Terry Lewis with IO. Clinton scored six more field did the winners and the smaller Wildcats also out-rebounded the Arrows, 43-36. How then, you ask, did Sullivan manage to win the game? Well, by hitting 20 of 38 free throws, while the Wildcats managed just four of the IO charity flips they were awarded, how. After trailing by the nine- point deficit at the first quarter stop, Sullivan wasted no time in getting back into the game, as Mihajlovich hit three fielders and Townsend one to put the Arrows into a 21-20 lead at 5:28 of the second period. But fans who were expecting the Wildcats to fold at that point were to be disappointed.

Losing their lead served only to spur the Clintonians to new heights, and soon, with Luce and Lewis leading the way, they had built a 30-23 lead with 2:27 left in the half. They were still on top at the intermission. 34-30. Twice in the third period Sullivan was able to claw its way into a one-point lead, but' when the quarter was ended the scrappy Wildcats were on top, 46-43. With Luce scoring 12 points in the final quarter, it seemed Sullivan was doomed.

Clinton led, 58-53, with but 2:33 to go, but the Arrows finally got untracked at that point. Pirtle hit a pair of free throws and then a fielder, cutting lead to 58-57 at 2:03. Luce ended scoring with a fielder at 1:52, but nine seconds later Wildcat Lewis fouled out and Sevier hit both free throws. Again Clinton led by just one. Although Schulte was able to creep back within six points on several occasions, Brazil controlled the remainder of the game and had a 15-point lead going into the fourth quarter before the Golden Bears rallied behind Mike Klueh. Veterans Phil Randall and Mike Broady paced the winners with 18 and 17 points and 13 and IO rebounds respectively, while Klueh led all scorers with a 21- point effort for Schulte It was Randall who hit the key baskets, both early in the contest to give Brazil its advantage and again in the third quarter when Schulte came briefly within nine points. The 6-3 forward hit his first five shots in the first quarter and dominated the area around both baskets except for periods on the bench with foul difficulties. Broady was four-for-four in the opening eight minutes, and while his shooting cooled after that his rebounding picked up. Kevin Thompson added IO points, Wes Parker added his always steady floor game and tiny Rob McClellan and Todd Danforth and Brent Jeffries also added big plays for the Devils.

Scott Perla added 13 points for Schulte, but unfortunately for the Bears the spindly guard was the leading rebounder until the final period. Shaffer added nine points and a team-high eight boards and Bob Jones came off the bench for five points, five steals and two assists. Brazil had a 22-14 lead at the first stop, sinking ll of 15 from the field, and shot 50 per cent in the second period to increase that lead to 42-29. Schulte scrapped back within nine points in the third quarter before Randall hit two straight baskets and grabbed some big rebounds, and Parker converted two consecutive rebound baskets at the end of the period for a 57-42 spread. marvelous moves around the baseline led Schulte back into the game in the fourth period but the Bears, who appear to need a good dose of confidence more than anything else, had continual bad luck on shots rolling around the rim and were never closer than the final margin in the period.
