He -Charley Young SaysAnatomy of a Diagram Buffalo Evening News Sports Editor Could the Bills give some idea how they'd deploy their defenses, particularly since ex-coach Lou Saban made no bones about the fact that he didn't like to flipflop his linebackers and cornerbacks, even to meet unusual situations. No response. Contact renewed with Dallas on Nov. 1. The Cowboys, struggling a bit on offense now, clammed up.

Coach Landry clamped the lid on all information about the shotgun, even its efficiency in third down situations. Back to the Bills. They'd mail a diagram. Also the assurance there was enough flexibility in Buffalo's defense to permit moves to cover any "set" the shotgun might present. Nov.

2, diagram arrives from Bills. It's sterile. One right out of the Little League coaching book. No pass routes, no numbers, no names. Just Xs and Os.

So, to the drawing board. Research showed Cowboy pass patterns off shotgun were basic hooks, curls, sidelines, etc. Not nearly as complicated as you might think. Diagram prepared. (Krzyzynski's own rough sketch appears here today).

Meanwhile, out at the Bills practice field, the coaching staff went to work on defense. Film studies were intense nobody, in fact, studies films as long or as hard as McCabe. Scouting information was reviewed, tendency patterns were analyzed. Statistics were perused for any hint that might be helpful. The Bills got busy.

They figured they had just about every possible situation the shotgun could present covered as well as it could be. The preparation took them through Friday. Then came the diagram in The News. "Where'd you get it?" McCabe asked again. "We spent most of Saturday's defensive drill working against the lineup you showed with two wide receivers on one side." Good thing they did.

The first time Dallas used the shotgun, you know what "set" they used don't you? The one in the News' TV Game Plan. Well, maybe it saved a score or two. The Bills' shut down the shotgun and the Dallas running game and yielded just two touchdowns, only one on a shotgun pass, in perhaps their strongest defensive game of the season. D. Pearsen Hardcourt Championship in Bournmouth, Eng.

Connors had trouble with Smith, who has come back from an injured elbow. "He has become a very difficult man to beat," Connors said. Whatever difficulties or problems are involved in the mechanics of how newspapermen gather information seldom, if ever, is of interest to readers. The stories and the pictures are the things. The only things.

But there are exceptions. For instance: Larry Felser, the News' pro football writer, was talking with Richie McCabe, defensive backfield coach of the Bills, for background on Mario Clark's progress as a rookie cornerback. "Before you ask me any questions," said Richie, "I've got one for you. "Where'd you get that diagram of the Cowboys' shotgun the one you used in Friday's TV Game Plan section?" "Why?" Felser wanted to know. "Because it was one we'd never seen before," said Richie, harking back to the coaching staff's runs and reruns and reruns of Dallas game films as Buffalo prepared for last Monday's game on national TV.

"They hadn't used it before." Ah, but they had. Back in September. Early September. Gene Krzyzynski, News staffer who prepares the TV Game Plan, saw it on television. He remembered a story he'd read on how the Cowboys were making good on two-thirds of their third -down situations by using the shotgun.

He made notes and diagrams from TV, then dug up quotes from Tom Landry and his special assistant, Ermal Allen, a prime mover behind the Cowboys' use of the shotgun beginning a year ago. The plan was to diagram the shotgun for News' readers before the Bills played in Dallas. About Oct. 20, the Bills office was contacted and asked to provide an official diagram. No response.

On Oct. 27, Ermal Allen was contacted in Dallas, and a similar request made. No response. Same day contact was renewed with Bills with specific request: Would the coaches chart a play with two wide receivers on the same side of the shotgun, the most dramatic illustration of the kind of mismatches the Cowboys try to achieve?
