SOUTH EDITION i Bake's Daring Run Ends Baseball's Longest Night By VITO STELLINO i News Staff Writer At 13 minutes and 40 seconds past 3 AM EDT today after 25 innings of baseball that lasted 7 hours and 4 minutes John Mil ner of the New York Mets swung and missed It was i a over The longest night game and the second longest game in the history of baseball was in the record books The St Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets who have something of a fetish for these marathon affairs played for 25 innings before Bake daring run gave the Cards a dramatic 4 3 triumph Only the famous 26 inning 1 1 tie between Brooklyn and Bos ton in 1920 lasted longer in in nings The 7:04 clocking made it the second longest in time The Mets lost to the Giants in 7 hours and 23 minutes in 1964 in a 23 inning battle THE PREVIOUS longest night game was a 24 inning marathon the Mets lost to Houston in 1968 So the Mets have played three of the seven longest games in history 23 24 and 25 innings and have lost all three The game was televised in New York and only a few insomniacs and a hardy band of the 13460 fans who were on hand at Shea Stadium when it started were still watching when it ended Among faithful were Commissioner and Mrs Bowie Kuhn who watched it all from alongside the Met dugout and it may be a while before the commissioner suggests to his wife that they go to a badseball game again THE MAN who was responsi ble for keeping it going was Mets started the 25th and took the loss There were very few scoring opportunities throughout extra innings However the Mets left the bases loaded in both the 23rd and 24th innings and the Cards also left three men on in their half of the 24th THE CARDS also had two on and none out in the 20th inning when Met Manager Yogi Berra was ejected after arguing an obstruction call against i catcher Duffy Dyer who went 23 innings before being lifted for a pinch runner But Duffy then picked Reggie Smith off second base to kill that rally Lou Brock of the Cardinals did not steal a base during his 19 innings as he went for 9 and caught stealing for the 30th time in the JOth inning Cleon home run came after elix Millan had opened the fifth inning with an infield single and gave the Mets a 3 1 lead Jones lined Bob 2 ball 2 strike delivery over the left field wall ST LOUIS scored its first Records Broken Tied In Marathon rom News Wire Services
