Horse Apples Grow Mushrooms By CADEN BLINCOE Cincinnati Enquirer FLORENCE, Ky. (AP) an old saying among the veteran railbirds that the only way to make money following the horses is with a broom and shovel. While that rather picturesque expression may or may not be true, a lot of successful folks connected with the multi-billion-dollar horse industry would argue with it, and it ceases to be a laughing matter when racetrack operators are faced with what to do with what the horses drop during the course of a business. John H. Battaglia, general manager of the Latonia Race Course in Florence, spoke candidly on the issue.

"Most folks," he said, pay $1 to get Penn Central Trustees Eye Future PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Penn Central trustees meet today to discuss the status of the bankrupt railroad amid reports that the line could be shut down unless it receives more federal money. The latest threatened closure is prompted by $16.4 million in bills due Tuesday, including some payroll checks. The sprawling railroad serves 16 Eastern and Midwestern states, two Canadian provinces and the District of Columbia. Its 40,000 miles of track, 4,200 locomotives and 200,000 pieces of rolling stock are the backbone of the economic well-being of a region that produces about half the goods. The largest railroad also loses money at the rate of more than $500,000 daily.

It is being reorganized in federal bankruptcy court. The line is hoping for quick action to get its hands on the $125 million Congress appropriated this month after the trustees first threatened a shutdown. would not necessarily shut down if congressional action seemed on its way," said a railroad spokesman. A railroad aid measure is now being delayed in the Senate, which is tied up over a proposal to ease its rules for halting a filibuster. The line, along with several other financially-pressed railroads in the northeast, is scheduled to be converted into a semipublic corporation next year.

Susan Ford Wants Post WASHINGTON (AP) Susan Ford, the 17-year-old daughter, has been studying photography and is applying for work as a summer intern photographer at the Washington Post, a White House spokeswoman says. Sheila Weidenfeld, Mrs. press secretary, said Sunday that Susan has yet to hear from the Post. She said lessons are under the guidance of White House photographer David Kennedy. in, pay another 35 cents for a program and all set for a pretty good entertainment and few of them think of the horses and what they do when not running on the track.

"But, a fact of nature that on or off the track, horses have to use the bathroom facilities and a big Battaglia said, "creating a monumental problem." The track has living facilities for 1,100 horses a year, including the harness and thoroughbred season. It strains the imagination, Battaglia said, to realize the amount the horses produce in a day, much less what they generate in a time. Latonia has an agreement with the Hardy Trucking Wampum, which sends huge trucks down three times a week at no cost to the track, and hauls the rich material to limestone caves in Pennsylvania where it is used to grow mushrooms. River Downs Race Course in Cincinnati has a similar agreement with a Lebanon, Ohio, mushroom firm during its 100 days of racing each summer. Tracks are a big supplier for apples" needed by the mushroom industry, according to Craig Brna, a driver for the Wampum, trucking firm.

He said the growers like fertilizer from other animals as well as horses. He said the firm makes pickups at tracks in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia and at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. know why," said Brna, who hauls some 70,000 pounds per load three times a week from here. Battaglia, who said local farmers still get a piece of the action, said track men have been trying schemes for years to get out from under the problem. Six years ago, Battaglia recalled, two investors, one believed to be former jockey Eddie Arcaro, had a scheme to remove the material from stalls by conveyor belts to pits to be burned.

Battaglia said the scheme had en- People In Tears At Nixon Party PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) telling you, he had people in entertainer Bob Hope said after former President Richard M. (AP)- The Crystal Bay Club and Cal-Neva Lodge have been purchased by the BKJ Corp. for more than $9 million, an official with one of the clubs said Sunday. Ray Plunkett, general manager and vice president of the Crystal Bay Club, said the sale which had been in progress for some time took place Friday.

Plunket said the BKJ Corp. is composed of Everett Brunzell, of Brunzell Construction Co. based in Reno, plus Charles Ketcham and Norman Jenson, both of Las Vegas. The clubs on the north shore of Lake Tahoe were purchased from the Ohio Real Estate Investment Co. and the Ohio Real Estate Equities Plunkett said.

Plunkett said BKJ, which had been "in the stages of purchasing the clubs for some time," had been awaiting approval from the Ohio companies and the courts before the sale could be consu mated. Stockholders of the two clubs had filed suit against the Ohio companies in 1973, resulting in the assets of the two companies being placed in federal receivership. Logan Daily Nawt Monday, Fab. 24, 1f7f Pago 7 Soviets Progress I In Meat, Poultry I By DON KENDALL AP Farm Writer WASHINGTON (AP) An Agriculture Department expert said today that the Soviet Union is making significant progress in turning out more meat, milk and poultry for consumers despite reduced grain harvests last year. The push by Moscow to put more of those products on Russian food tables has been watched closely by department officials for some time as a sign that the Soviet Union probably will continue as a buyer of U.S.

corn and other livestock feeds. "The major bright spot in the Soviet farm scene last year was the good performance of the livestock sector, which continued to move ahead strongly," Fletcher Pope specialist in the Economic Research Service, said. Over-all Soviet farm production slipped 3 to 4 per cent below record as the result of grain harvests being smaller than expected, but Pope said those harvests still were the second largest in history. report, published in a weekly issue of "Foreign Agriculture," did not speculate on what the surge in Soviet livestock production may hold for U.S. grain exports.

USDA officials have indicated for several years that goals for upgrading consumer diets could lead to sustained sales of U.S. feed. The Soviets currently are buying relatively small quantities of corn and wheat, held in check by limited U.S. stocks and government export icies. But some officials believe long-term sales are possible if Russia continues to invest as heavily in its livestock sector as now indicated.

As of Jan. 1, Pope saidt Soviet livestock inventories were at record levels. The total cattle herd, for example, was 109.1 million head, up from 106.3 million a year earlier, and 104 million on Jan. 1, 1973. Pope said Soviet capital investment in agriculture was increased 9 per cent last year and that a similar boost is planned in 1975.
