Crosse Tribune, Sunday, January 23, 1972 Fiore For Fiore Nick Fiore has replaced Tony Fiore as football coach at Eau Claire Regis. Nick, younger brother of Tony, attended La Crosse State University from 1966 through 1969 and has been assistant this past fall. Tony will retain his head basketball coaching job and also take over as the athletic director. His Regis grid teams fashioned a 27-15-2 record in five seasons, the only losing mark coming his first year. The 29-year-old Nick compete in athletics at La Crosse State, although he was assistant swimming coach one season.

He played football while in the service. Wood Leaves Gap The departure of No. 24 leaves a gap in the Green Bay Packer defensive secondary. No. 24 is veteran Willie Wood, who will join the San Diego Chargers as an assistant coach.

It will be hard to view the Packer secondary without seeing little Willie coming in fast and slicing down a runner with his ankle tackles. But he has given Green Bay fans 12 good years and you ask much more than that. departure punctures another hole in an otherwise already holy (not saintly) secondary. Coach Dan Devine is working on the problem of filling safety spot, but admits just reworking some of his personnel and kicking around the pro football draft and some trades. just honestly know who likely to have there next said Devine.

the possibility that A1 Mathews will be moved there. The whole secondary has to be reworked. Actually we have four guys (Ken Ellis, Mathews, Charlie Hall and Doug Hart) who can play the comer. A1 Randolph is definitely a Concerning the drafting of defensive secondary personnel, Devine said: safe to assume not going to get both a comerback and a safety out of the draft. You may get one or the other, if lucky, but probably not About Wood, Devine had kind words.

easy to remove Willie name from our personnel all you have to do is slide his card out of its slot. But another thing to physically replace him in the Watt Unwanted Adrian decision to quit the U. S. ski jumping team comes as no surprise. He has been a problem to ski officials for the last few years and has been a troublemaker to coach Lloyd (Snoball) Severud and team director Jim Balfanz most of this past year.

Although he ranked fourth going into this competition at Leavenworth, Watt given much of a chance to make the final five-man U.S. Olympic squad, which will jump at Sapporo, Japan. The top three jumpers will automatically qualify and the coaches will select the remaining two. Watt said ski officials not taking an individual for what he is worth. Team morale is so low that jumpers have been unable to concentrate on Balfanz denied allegations and said Watt was the person responsible for any morale problems.

is our considered opinion that the reason for a drop in team morale has been the presence of Watt. He has been cancerous to the jumping team, and glad he has removed himself because we were getting ready to do said Balfanz. One of the complaints of is the addition of Greg Swor to the U.S. team, although he qualify in the top 10 after the first two pre-olympic trial jumps. Swor was retained because of the talent he showed last year and the U.S.

coaches decided they would go along with him a little longer hoping he would snap out of his slump. think it became apparent to Watt that some of our young jumpers are beginning to beat him said Balfanz. saw the handwriting on the wall and chose to stir up a ruckus rather than wait to be beaten Slim Pick in's University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire coach Ken Anderson has done it again. A college basketball recruiter with few peers, Anderson landed two prize packages at the semester break with the enrolment of two former all-state players, Randy Wade and Jeff Ellenson. Wade, a 6-5 high scoring prep from Omro, transferred from Marquette.

He was one of the leading scorers on the Warrior frosh team a year ago and had landed a berth on coach A1 varsity before withdrawing. Ellenson, a 6-8 all-stater in 1965 from Eau Claire Memorial, starred three years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and has a year of ineligibility remaining. Robert (Kootch) Carroll is at it again. Carroll has added basketball to his Stars of Tomorrow program and will hold the first annual cage tournament for boys in grades six, seven, eight and nine March 10,11 and 12 be separate tournaments for each grade and be co-sponsored by the Recreational Committee of the Greater La Crosse Chamber of Commerce and the city recreation department, headed by Euey Fry. baseball tournaments have drawn national attention.

Brooks Robinson was asked if the Baltimore Orioles would miss Frank leadership ability (he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers). Lions' Walker Vows Vengeance (From Sports Dispatches) Wayne Walker, Detroit linebacker, peeved at Minnesota Viking quarterback Gary Cuozzo for his attempt to throw a long TD pass in the final seconds of a game against the Detroit Lions: I have to play until 40 years old, get him (Cuzzo). So why I second-guess? Pepsi, Tosa Collide At 'Y' Powerful Pepsi, running through the first half of the YMCA Basketball League schedule with a perfect 9-0 record, got upended by a determined Coney Island quint last Wednesday, but for the Cola cagers, this tilt could prove to be the more crucial of the two.

Coney Island, beaten in the first week of the season by Pepsi 67-60, turned the tables with almost the exact score, spilling the league leaders 66-61. Pepsi shackled ace Coney eager Gary Robarge to just one basket and a total of seven points, but Roger 24-point performance led to the upset. The Tosa Club handled Montgomery Wards 69-57 to move to a 9-1 record and a tie with Pepsi for the loop lead. That deadlock will not last, however, as the two powers collide head-on this Wednesday in what should be the most crucial game of the entire year. Another tough contest will pit Coney (7-3), which must win to keep alive any hopes of the crown, against a tenacious Jaycee squad (6-4).

In remaining action, (4-6) meets the La Crosse Cooler (0-10), Montgomery Wards (4-6) squares off against the Interstate Campgrounds (2-8) and Dairyland Power (6-4) eyes La Crosse Printing (3-7). The individual scoring race is hardly as exciting as Ace Stadthaus of the Jaycees holds 218 points in 10 games for a 21.8 average, well better than Ron second-place standing with 197.
