Jack Snyder stands at the intersection where the atomic-powered sign is being tested Atomic sign glows day and night here Highway designer says area is safe from fallout By AL DAVIS Hundreds of motorists daily pass through an intersection here in the Valley without knowing that they are being directed by a sign that's atomic-powered. Worried about atomic radio-activity or fallout? Well don't, said Jack Snyder, highway designer at the Arizona Highway Department. "The sign, located over the Maricopa Freeway eastbound access road at its intersection with 19th Avenue, is -completely safe; if there is any radioisotope emission, by the time it reaches ground level it would be practically zero," Snyder emphasized last week.

The 750-pound sign contains a sealed self-luminous module holding light-generating phosphor combined with radioactive Krypton 85 gas. Krypton is a byproduct of nuclear reactors and was furnished free by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Snyder pointed out. "Installed Sept. 2, the sign has been continuously glowing day and night and we've experienced no problems with it," commented Snyder.

Through a contract awarded by the Highway Depart- American-Atomics Corp. Tucson, constructed the sign, highlighting a 5 by 6 foot left-turn arrow and the word, "only." A contract was assigned to American-Atomics in 1963 for one such sign for freeway use. The company in turn, proposed to the Highway Commission in November 1968 construction of the particular sign now being used. "We helped with the design of the one sign. The department doesn't now know whether It will add more such signs around the state," said Snyder.

"Though the contract was for research and development, eventually there will be signs produced for around the country at near conventional costs and competitive with the electrically-powered ones," the highway designer said. He indicated that the sign was installed in much the same way as the electrical signs, "but one of its major benefits is that the atomic Computerized camping Calif ornians can place reservations A computerized campsite reservation system will soon be available to outdoorsmen for the first time. A network of computer terminals, operated by Compu- ticket Corporation of California, will provide the service beginning tomorrow in key metropolitan areas of northern and southern California, it was announced by William Perm Mott director of the Department of Parks and Recreation for California. The Computlcket system will provide instant confirmation and reservations to 67 campgrounds in 70 units of the California State Park System. "Our new computer system will greatly improve the current mail reservation program which was introduced by the department in 1968 to replace the inconvenient 'morning roll call' method," said Mott.

Mott explained how the Computicket set-up will work. A prospective camper goes to a convenient local Compu- ticket center in a bank, store, or market. He indicates the park and dates desired, and the type and size of his equipment. The operator places this information into the system and, in a few seconds, a message appears on a display screen indicating that the de- sired space and dates are av- ilable, or offering an atterna- tive if they are not available. Additional alternatives can be requested if necessary.

When location and dates are acceptable to the camper, he pays the full fees due, plus a $1 service charge. The reservation is confirmed and the machine produces a ticket showing name of park, date of first night, number of nights, site size, and the camper's name. With his ticket, the buyer will receive an information sheet advising him about cancellation refunds, and similar matters. Reservations can be made all year long for dates throughout the calendar year. The cutoff date to make campsite reservations in any calendar week, which is Sunday through Saturday night, will be the Tuesday preceding that week.

Under the new system, reservations will not be made at parks. Mail requests can be made only at state headquarters in Sacramento on a department reservation form. "About 6,600 state park campsites in California, ranging from primitive to sophisticated camping grounds, are avilable to campers," said Mott. Computicket, a subsidiary of Computer Sciences the largest Independent company in the field of information sciences, was contracted by the State of California to handle the computerized reservation service for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Nick Mayo, president of Computicket, hailed the addition to the Computicket system.

"It is another milestone in providing an ever growing convenience to the consumer," said Mayo. "This will enable the camper to select and reserve a site either a few days before his departure, or, if he prefers, months In advance. "We join with the California State Park System in providing Californians with the first such computerized reservation system in the nation," said Mayo. He pointed out that the sign is not subject to power failures. "There is no assurance there will be more signs used around the state. This also rests on the availability of curies (units of radioactivity) of Krypton produced from nuclear power plants," he stated. "Our studies so far have shown that there has been no adverse effect from the new signs' exposure to the hot sun and environmental changes," Snyder said.

Snyder, who has been in his present position for nine years, also said that Harry Dooley, president of American-Atomics, will present a research paper on the sign's function to the Highway JRe- search Board, a nongovernmental organization, in Washington, D.C.
