Cardinal Cana I i Dies; Mayor of Vatican City VATICAN CITY, 3 Cardinal Canali, 87, for 22 years the mayor of Vatican City, died today of bronchial pneumonia and cir' culatory complications. His death came four days after the suddent death of another Italian cardinal, Domenico Tardlni, the Roman Catholic Secretary of State. The two deaths reduced the membership of the College of Cardinals to 82.

Cardinal Canal! had long i suffered from a circulatory condition. He was stricken with pneumonia late last week and doctors gave up hope for his survival Saturday. His life ebbed away slowly as he lay In a coma under an oxygen tent. Visited by Pope Pope John visited him Sunday night after the death of Cardinal Tardlni brought the pontiff back to the Vatican from his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome. The Pope delayed his return to Castel Gandolfo to be near the dying cardinal, and when notified of the death visited his room to pray.

Cardinal Canali, a jovial, round-faced prelate, had been president of the pontifical commission for the state of Vatican City since shortly after Pope Pius XII created the commission in 1939. The post was similar to that of a municipal mayor, with his signature required on every decision concerning the internal administration of the 108-acre city state, its buildings, employes, sanitation services, gendarmerie and 1,000 residents. A member of the College of Cardinals since December 16, 1935, he was one of the few living cardinals who were present at both the 1939 conclave which elected Pope Pius XII and the 1958 conclave which elected Pope Held Other Posts Along with running the adi ministration of the tiny state, i Cardinal Canali headed the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican tribunal connected with indulgences and absolutions from censures. He returned to Gonzaga three years ago to assume his previous position there and remained until his death. Father Cosenza completed his classical studies in the ciety of Jesus at the Novitiate in Wemessville. in 1946, and completed his philosophical studies at Woodstock College before coming to Washington. He returned to Woodstock in 1952 and was ordained a priest there in 1955. His final year of studies was completed at the Tertianship in Auriesville, N.
